Introduction

As the park that’s home to the second largest hot spring in Canada, Liard River Hot Springs Provincial Park is the ultimate place to relax on RV vacations. Located at kilometre 765 of the Alaska Highway 97, Northern Rockies B, British Columbia, this 11 sq. km. (4 sq. mile) provincial park is ecologically significant owing to the fact that it is set within a lush boreal spruce forest.

Liard River Hot Springs Provincial Park features 53 RV campsites available by reservation and on first-come first-served basis. Facilities and amenities at the park include water taps, pit/flush toilets, garbage stations, wheelchair accessible areas, playground, picnic shelter and area, change houses, lookout points, Information Center, and parking lots. In addition, the park features a hot spring with water temperatures ranging from 42°C (108°F) to 52°C (126°F). Moreover, a boardwalk that leads to the hot spring (Alpha pool) passes through a warm water swamp in the park.

Recreational activities to enjoy at the park include scenery and wilderness viewing, flora and fauna observation, fishing, hiking and biking, photography, interpretive programs, bird viewing, swimming, picnicking, and lots more.

Liard River Hot Springs Provincial Park was established in 1957.

Transportation

Driving

Located at kilometre 765 of the Alaska Highway 97, Northern Rockies B, British Columbia, Liard River Hot Springs Provincial Park is a simple drive-in park that is easy to access by RVs, trailers, and other motorized vehicles. Local roads within the park connect the campsites and parking areas and allow for easy navigation within the park. There are no driving restrictions within the park.

Parking

There are two parking areas available for RVs and trailers, as well as cars at Liard River Hot Springs Provincial Park. RV campers and visitors can either park their rigs at the designated parking lots or at their respective campsites. Overnight parking is available.

Public Transportation

There are no direct public transportation services to Liard River Hot Springs Provincial Park.

Liard River Hot Springs Campground

Liard River Hot Springs Campground in Liard River Hot Springs Provincial Park features 53 pet-friendly campsites available for RVs and tents. None of the campsites in the park is equipped with RV hookup options. RV length limit at the campground is 32 ft (10 m), however vacationers with larger RVs can contact the park ahead to find out if there is space available.

The campground is equipped with pit/flush toilets, garbage station, water taps, fire pits, as well as picnic tables.

Only 21 campsites in the campground are available by reservations, while the remaining 32 campsites are available on first-come first-served basis.

In-Season

Bird Viewing

104 bird species have been recorded at Liard River Hot Springs Provincial Park and these birds offer wonderful viewing opportunities for RV campers at the park. The bird species in the park are observed in various habitats. Shorebirds such as common snipe and solitary sandpiper are seen in the swamp, while swallows, gull, kingfishers, blackbirds, and nighthawks are seen near the swamp. Around the edges of the swamp, bohemian waxwings are common. Other birds in the park include sparrows, warblers, thrushes, and woodpeckers.

Wildlife Observation

A total of 28 mammals have been recorded at Liard River Hot Springs Provincial Park, the most common of which is moose, which is seen in the park year-round and provides the most consistent viewing opportunities for RV campers and visitors. Other commonly seen wildlife in the park include calves, cows, and bulls, which are often found in the swamp areas.

Flora

Liard River Hot Springs Provincial Park sits in a Boreal Black and White Spruce biogeoclimatic zone featuring 250 flora species with majority being of the boreal variety. Fourteen thermally influenced plant species are also available in the park, thanks to the effect of the hot springs. All of these florae make the park an absolute wonder of nature and provides resplendent views for RV campers on vacation.

Off-Season

Hiking/Cycling

Hiking and cycling recreational opportunities are available for RV campers at Liard River Hot Springs Provincial Park. Campers can enjoy strolls from one of the parking lots in the park, all the way to Alpha Pool, while bypassing a scenic lookout point. Besides, cycling activities can be enjoyed on the roads in the park. The use of bicycle helmets when cycling is mandatory.

Swimming

Swimming opportunities are available at Alpha Pool in Liard River Hot Springs Provincial Park. The pool has change houses, benches, wheelchair accessible areas, and pit/vault toilets. The pool also has a shallow end for children to be able to enjoy swimming in too. No lifeguards are on duty at the pool.

Picnicking

Liard River Hot Springs Provincial Park features a picnic area and picnic shelter where RV campers can enjoy outdoor meals with family and friends on vacation. The picnic area is equipped with picnic tables and other nice amenities to make lunch at the park wonderful.
