Introduction

Sitting on the shore of Lake Huron as one of the most ecologically diverse sites in the region, MacGregor Point Provincial Park is a unique getaway for RV vacations. Located on Lake Huron, off Lake Range Road 33, near Port Elgin, this 12 sq. km. (4.6 sq. mile) provincial park occupies 7 km (4 miles) of coastline offering wonderful camping and recreational opportunities for RV campers.

Recreational opportunities available at the park include hiking and biking on scenic trails, bird viewing, canoeing and kayaking, swimming, cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, snowshoeing, skating, interpretive and discovery programs, pet walking, photography, picnicking, nature observation, wildlife viewing, fishing, and many more.

Within the park, there are three camping areas that each feature three campgrounds available for RVs and tents by reservation and on first-come first-served basis. Electric hookups for RVs are available at the campgrounds. Amenities and facilities also available in the park include group camps, yurts, water taps, pit/vault toilets, restrooms with showers, and laundry facilities. The campgrounds also offer access to trailheads, playground, wheelchair accessible areas, garbage disposal station, and parking lots.

MacGregor Point Provincial Park, which was established in 1975, is home to the famous spring Huron Fringe Birding Festival and Wild for the Arts fall arts festival.

Transportation

Driving

Located on Lake Huron, off Lake Range Road 33, near Port Elgin, MacGregor Point Provincial Park is a simple drive-in park that is easy to locate and access by RVs, trailers, and other motorized vehicles. A network of roads within the park connects the campgrounds, camping areas, and other places of interest such as the day use area. There are no driving restrictions within the park.

Parking

Eight (8) parking areas are available in MacGregor Point Provincial Park for RV campers and visitors to park their cars, trailers, and RVs. Four of the parking areas are located around the campgrounds, while two parking lots are available at the day use area. You’ll find one parking lot each at the group camp and around the Lake Ridge Trail. Overnight parking is available at the park.

Public Transportation

Several bus services are available from Toronto to Macgregor Point Provincial Park.

Reservations camping

Algonquin Camping Area

Algonquin Camping Area in MacGregor Point Provincial Park consists of three campgrounds - Ashwoods, Cedar Lane, Birch Boulevard - that feature 136 pet-friendly campsites available for RVs and tents. All the campsites in the campgrounds are equipped with electric hookup options for RVs. RV length limit at the campground is 32 ft (10 m), however, vacationers with larger rigs can call the park ahead to find out if there is space available.

Amenities available at Algonquin Camping Area include water taps, pit/vault toilets, restrooms with showers, laundry facilities, access to trailheads, playground, wheelchair accessible areas, garbage disposal station, and nearby parking lots. Yurts are available at Birch Boulevard campground.

All the campsites in the camping area are available by reservation, except two campsites and all the yurts at Birch Boulevard which are available on first-come first-served basis only.

Nipissing Camping Area

Nipissing Camping Area in MacGregor Point Provincial Park consists of three campgrounds - Deer Drive, Egret Circle, Foxway - that feature 105 pet-friendly campsites available for RVs and tents. Only the campsites in the Egret Circle and Foxway campgrounds are equipped with electric hookup options for RVs. RV length limit at the campground is 32 ft (10 m), however, vacationers with larger rigs can call the park ahead to find out if there is space available.

Amenities available at Nipissing Camping Area include water taps, pit/vault toilets, restrooms with showers, laundry facilities, telephone, garbage disposal station, trailheads access to swimming area, and nearby parking lot.

All the campsites in Egret Circle and Foxway Campgrounds are available by reservation, except one campsite in Foxway Campground and all the campsites in Deer Drive Campground which are available on first-come first-served basis only.

Huron Camping Area

Huron Camping Area in MacGregor Point Provincial Park consists of three campgrounds - Grouse Landing, Hawk Ridge, Iris Grove - that feature 119 pet-friendly campsites available for RVs and tents. Only the campsites in the Iris Grove Campground are equipped with electric hookup options for RVs. RV length limit at the campground is 32 ft (10 m), however, vacationers with larger rigs can call the park ahead to find out if there is space available.

Amenities available at Huron Camping Area include water taps, pit/vault toilets, access to trailheads, restrooms with showers, playground, garbage station, nearby parking lot.

All the campsites in Huron Camping Area are available by reservation.

Seasonal activities in MacGregor Point Provincial Park

In-Season

Hiking

MacGregor Point Provincial Park features five easy to moderate hiking trails that pass through different sites in the park and offer scenic viewing opportunities for RV campers at the park.

The 1.2 km (0.8 mile) easy Huron Fringe Trail circles the Visitor Center and provides wonderful habitats for shore birds and turtles. The 6 km (4 mile) Old Shore Road Trail, which is also easy to hike, follows the shore of Lake Huron and provides excellent beach and shore views. Lake Ridge Trail, a 4 km (2.5 mile) moderate hiking trail, takes hikers through the interior parts of the park. Furthermore, Tower Trail, a 3.5 km (2 mile) easy trail takes campers around a wetland in the park that offers campers the opportunity to view wildlife and waterfowl. Kempfs Trail, which is 0.8 km (0.5 miles) long, is also an amazing trail to hike on at the park.

Biking

MacGregor Point Provincial Park has several off-road trails that offer lovers of biking easy and interesting ways to get around the park and enjoy the beautiful sights in the park. Cyclists can enjoy riding on the 3.7 km (2 mile) Deer Run Bike Trail, the Old Shore Road Trail, the 3.5 km (2 mile) Tower Trail, and Kempfs Trail.

In addition to riding along the trails in the park, RV campers can also enjoy recreational cycling on the roads in the park.

Bird Viewing

Over 200 bird species have been sighted in MacGregor Point Provincial Park. The wetlands in the park are particularly popular for sighting the American Egret and Black-crowned Night Heron. During spring and fall, the shoreline in the park is a popular bird migration route where numerous birds are seen by vacationers and visitors in the park.

Off-Season

Canoeing/Kayaking

Although there are no boat launch facilities, canoeing and kayaking opportunities are available at MacGregor Point Provincial Park along the shore of Lake Huron. All canoeists and paddlers are advised to exercise caution on the lake because the water conditions usually change quickly.

Swimming

MacGregor Point Provincial Park features a 50 m (164 ft) long gently sloping beach that is sandy with boulders. The beach present excellent swimming opportunities for RV campers and change facilities are available. However, there are no buoys to designate the swimming areas and no lifeguards are on duty at the beach, hence caution is advised for all swimmers.

Winter Activities

A number of opportunities are available for RV campers to enjoy winter activities at MacGregor Point Provincial Park. Winter vacationers can enjoy cross-country skiing on 11 km (7 miles) of groomed trails, skating through the trees, snowshoeing on designated trails, and snowmobiling on the roads in the park.
