Introduction

Uniquely sited on the shores of Lake Simcoe, McRae Point Provincial Park features well-equipped RV campsites that offer wonderful and refreshing camping opportunities to vacationers. Located about 16 km (10 miles) off Highway 12, near Orillia, this 1.4 sq. km. (0.5 sq. mile) provincial park is a premier destination to enjoy holidays and time off with family and friends.

McRae Point Provincial Park features over 200 RV campsites in two campgrounds available by reservation and on first-come, first-served basis. The campsites are able to accommodate large and extra-large camping equipment and features electric hookups for RVs. Amenities and facilities available in the park include three docks, boat launch facilities, comfort stations, dog beaches, pet exercise areas, restrooms with showers, pit/vault toilets, showers, trailer dump station, recycling station, garbage station, firewood, wheelchair accessible areas, day use area, and parking lots.

Opportunities for recreation at the park include hiking, biking, fishing, boating, canoeing, kayaking, bird and wildlife viewing, flora and nature observation, hunting, swimming, photography, picnicking, and park programs.

McRae Point Provincial Park was established in 1971.

Transportation

Driving

Located about 16 km (10 miles) off Highway 12, on the shore of Lake Simcoe, McRae Point Provincial Park is a simple drive-in park that is easy to locate and access by RVs, trailers, and other motorized vehicles. Local paved roads within the park make navigation to the different parts of the park easy for campers and visitors. There are no driving restrictions within the park.

Parking

There are eight parking lots available in McRae Point Provincial Park for RV campers to park their rigs, trailers, and cars. You’ll find four parking lots around the North Campground and one parking lot around the south campground. Three large parking lots are located close to the beach in the park. RV campers can also park their rigs at their designated campsites in the campgrounds. Besides, overnight parking is available.

There are no direct public transportation services to McRae Point Provincial Park.

Reservations camping

North Campground

North Campground in McRae Point Provincial Park features 125 pet-friendly campsites available for RVs and tents. All the campsites in the campground are equipped with electric hookups for RVs. RV length limit at the campground is 32 ft (10 m), however, vacationers with larger rigs can call the park ahead to find out if there is space available.

Amenities and facilities available in North Campground include water taps, pit/vault toilet, restrooms with showers, recycling station, garbage station, wheelchair accessible areas, waterfront access, and parking lots.

104 campsites in the campground are available by reservation, while 21 campsites are available on first-come first-served basis only.

South Campground

South Campground in McRae Point Provincial Park features 78 pet-friendly campsites available for RVs and tents. Only 41 campsites in the campground are equipped with electric hookups for RVs. RV length limit at the campground is 32 ft (10 m), however, vacationers with larger rigs can call the park ahead to find out if there is space available.

Amenities and facilities available in North Campground include water taps, pit/vault toilets, restrooms, recycling station, garbage station, and parking lot.

67 campsites in the campground are available by reservation, while 11 campsites are available on first-come first-served basis only.

In-Season

Hiking/Biking

Water’s Edge Trail in McRae Point Provincial Park is a popular hiking trail that offers RV campers the opportunity to explore the diverse ecosystem in the park, starting from the boat launch, and passing along the edge of Lake Simcoe all the way to a boardwalk section, lush hardwood swamp and back to the boat launch. Campers enjoy the sight of a rich variety of ferns along the trail. An interesting feature of the trail is the lookout point which allows campers to enjoy beautiful sunsets over the lake.

Cycling opportunities are also available on the roads in the park.

Fishing

McRae Point Provincial Park offers amazing fishing opportunities for RV campers that enjoy angling. Various fish species are available in Lake Simcoe for RV campers to enjoy catching, including whitefish, trout, yellow perch, smallmouth bass, northern pike, largemouth bass, walleye, black crappie, bowfin, brown bullhead, rock bass, carp, rainbow smelt, and white suckers. Lake Simcoe is stocked annually with 100,000 trout and 150,000 whitefish.

Boating/Canoeing

Interesting boating, canoeing, and kayaking opportunities are available at McRae Point Provincial Park. Thanks to the boat launch facilities available in the park and the proximity to Lake Simcoe, RV campers enjoy access to Trent Severn Waterway in their boats and canoes. Boat rentals are available nearby.

Off-Season

Birding

Abundant bird species are available at McRae Point Provincial Park, offering RV campers and visitors plenty of opportunities to enjoy bird watching in the park. 79 species of birds are found in the park, including the pileated woodpecker yellow-throated vireo. Carry your binoculars and enjoy the view of these beautiful creatures.

Swimming

There is a large designated swimming area for RV campers and enjoy swimming to take a dip in Lake Simcoe. The swimming area is located at the beach in the southwestern end of the park.

Discovery Program

A discovery program that educates RV campers about the history of the park as well as the significance of the natural features of the park is available for campers of all ages at McRae Point Provincial Park.
