Driving

Travel to Mohawk Trail State Forest from Charlemont, MA, is a short trip at only four miles. The route follows along roads that are kept in excellent condition and largely consist of only two lanes. This journey travels through more rural sections of the state and is quite picturesque. Traffic remains fluid, and road construction is very infrequent. Occasionally, animals make their way onto the road. Remain alert to avoid any accidents.

Paid parking is available from May through mid-October via several on-premise lots.

Mohawk Trail State Forest Campground

Mohawk Trail State Forest Campground is open from May to mid October yearly for RV and tent camping and log cabin rentals by reservation only. There are 47 campsites available and 6 log cabins. Though leashed dogs are welcome on the premises, they are not permitted in the cabins. Generator use is acceptable.

There are no hookups here and the sites can accommodate a maximum RV length of 25 feet. The on-site amenities include a comfort station, a dish washing area, drinking water, a sewage disposal unit, food storage lockers, picnic areas, grills, pavilions, bathrooms, and pay phones.

Among the most popular activities are hiking, fishing, swimming, picnicking, hunting, canoeing, kayaking, and cross country skiing.

In-Season

Swimming

The 18 miles of rivers found on the property at Mohawk Trail State Forest make it a popular destination for families who love to spend some time playing in the sand and surf. You will find the waters clear, clean, and refreshing, and there is no shortage of spots where you can take a dip and practice your best doggy paddle.

Swimming is unsupervised here, so be sure to only enter the water when the weather conditions are favorable. Your dog is welcome to join you at the beach but must remain on a leash at all times.

Fishing

The rivers at Mohawk Trail State Forest teem with trout, making them a popular spot for avid fishermen looking to reel in the "big one." With seemingly endless miles of rivers to choose from, it won't be very tricky to find the perfect spot where the fish are definitely biting.

Bundle up in layers in case of chilly weather and be sure to bring along both drinking water and warm drinks in case of the cold. Snacks are always a great idea too.

Cross Country Skiing

The same trails that are used for hiking in the warmer weather are also excellent for cross country skiing when the snow starts to fly. The trails are not kept groomed during the winter months, so be prepared to experience some deep snow.
