Paint Lake Provincial Park sits on 24,290 hectares (55,950 acres) of land located 35 km (22 miles) to the south of Thompson, MB. Paint Lake is the perfect spot to enjoy a day out on the water. Transportation

Driving

Travel to Paint Lake Provincial Park from the heart of Thompson, MB, covers 47 km (or 29 miles). To begin the route, follow Mystery Lake Road until the exit for MB-6 S. Take the exit on the left for MB-375 S, continuing along this stretch of highway until the destination can be seen on the right. This route is comprised of highways of both four and two lanes. Traffic moves well, and the roads are kept clear of any debris or snow year-round. Though there is little construction in the winter months, you may encounter some in the summer, so be prepared to wait if necessary.

To head to this park from The Pas, you will travel 368 km (229 miles). Begin by following MB-39 E then continuing onto MB-6 N. At the sign for MB-375, make a right turn. Follow this route until you reach the first exit on the left. Take the exit to reach your destination. A lengthy journey, you will find this route is easy to follow and traverses over terrain that is largely straight and flat. You will encounter areas that have four lanes of traffic and some with two. Traffic moves well in both winter and summer months. The roads are well-maintained and well-marked. Road construction is a possibility in warm weather.

Reservations camping

Paint Lake Campground

Paint Lake Campground is found within Paint Lake Provincial Park and offers six bays of campsites interspersed throughout the recreational area. One of the six camping areas offers electrical hookups. There are 76 campsites in total, some with views of the lake itself. In addition to this, there are several campsites that are fully wheelchair accessible.

Reservations are highly recommended. Paint Lake Campground observes seasonal hours for RV and tent camping and is open from mid May through mid October yearly.

Generator use is permitted, and dogs are welcome so long as they remain leashed and courteous neighbors. Among the amenities at Paint Lake Campground are two playgrounds, a beach, cross country trails, two boat launches, a baseball diamond, a laundromat, washrooms, showers, a volleyball court, horseshoe pits, picnic areas, and two warmup cabins with woodstoves.

Water taps are also provided for collecting water if needed.

Off-Season

Hiking

If hiking through forest in search of interesting plant life or animals sounds like paradise, Paint Lake Provincial Park will not disappoint! The property is home to a network of trails suitable for people of all activity levels, ages, and health conditions. The terrain is largely flat and densely populated with trees to offer abundant shade cover. Along your journey you may discover moose, deer, foxes, or other animals who make their home in the woods. This area is also a haven for birds, so bring your binoculars and naturalist's guide along too!

You need a good pair of hiking shoes. Don't forget to pack some bottled water and a snack to enjoy. Your dog may join you on the hiking trails but must remain leashed.

Fishing

Paint Lake is a treasure trove of different varieties of fish just waiting to be caught. Though walleye and trout are the most popular species, fishermen from all around North America delight to cast their line out on Paint Lake in search of their own unique catch of the day.

After you've caught your fill, you can fillet your fish along the shore and bring them back to your campsite where you can cook up a feed for your family to enjoy.

Snowmobiling

Paint Lake Provincial Park is a great place to visit when the snow falls as well. There are well-maintained snowmobile runs that families can enjoy when the ground is covered with a rich blanket of snow.

Bring along a thermos full of coffee and a lunch to enjoy. Along your journey, stop off at one of the two warm-up cabins that are complete with woodstoves you can light to take the chill off after a vigorous run along one of the trails. Keep an eye while out on your snowmobile as the paths are also used by cross country skiers from time to time.

In-Season

Picnicking

With several picnic areas which include multiple tables and shelters, families can enjoy picnicking at Paint Lake Provincial Park both rain or shine. Stop by the convenience store at the Marina to stock up on supplies or get a takeout lunch from the restaurant to feast on while you enjoy the beautiful views of the dense forest and rich plant life in the picnic areas.

After lunch, consider a hike through the dirt paths in the forest or go off in search of wildlife and birds that make Paint Lake Provincial Park their home.

Paint Lake Marina

Paint Lake Marina is a great place to visit during a vacation to Paint Lake Provincial Park. Families may launch their pleasurecraft from one of the marina's two launches or rent a canoe, kayak, or other piece of watersports equipment to take out on the lake for the day.

The Marina is also home to a restaurant that is fully licensed as well as a convenience store where snacks, drinks, and other items can be purchased.

Swimming

Paint Lake offers no lifeguard service, so families must swim at their own risk. However, the waters remain clear and calm, making them quite safe for swimming, watersports, and other fun.
