Introduction

Located around Mohican State Park and Mohican Memorial Forest, Pleasant Hill Lake is uniquely sited within a recreation region where plenty of outdoor pursuits are available to campers and visitors. This US Army COE park, that lies 20 miles southeast of Mansfield and six miles west of Loudonville in Ohio, is easy to access by RVs, trailers, and other motorized vehicles and offers refreshing getaway opportunities for all.
At the park, you can enjoy a host of recreational opportunities ranging from water recreation to nature and wildlife viewing and outdoor meals. Boating is every camper’s favorite activity at this park as the waters offer unlimited horsepower boating opportunities. In addition, fishing is also a popular activity in the lake. Hiking and picnicking are other ways you can stay active at this COE park. The nearby Mohican State Park offers interesting biking and swimming opportunities for campers who wish to spread their adventure outside the COE park. After all, the trails at Pleasant Hill Lake connect to the state park’s extensive trail system.
There are no RV campgrounds at Pleasant Hill Lake. However, RV camping opportunities are available nearby at Mohican State Park.

Transportation

Driving

Located about 20 miles southeast of Mansfield and six miles west of Loudonville, Pleasant Hill Lake is easy to access via various highways as well as major and minor roads. Vacationers and campers can easily drive to the park and find parking spaces for their vehicles and motorhomes. RV rentals are available nearby at Loudonville for campers without RVs and trailers.

There are parking spaces available for campers and visitors at and around Pleasant Hill Lake. Parking is only allowed in designated parking spaces.

Campsites in Pleasant Hill Lake

Reservations camping

Mohican Campground

Mohican Campground at Mohican State Park features 174 pet-friendly campsites available for RVs and tents. Campsite reservations are accepted and peak season is between April and October.
Forty campsites are equipped with full hookups (electric, water, and sewer hookups), while 100 campsites have electric hookups only. Campground amenities include comfort station, dump station, flush toilets, showers, and potable water. Recreation opportunities such as volleyball, swimming, basketball, and naturalist programs are also available.
RV length limit at the campground is 56 feet, and quiet time is from 10 pm to 7 am.

In-Season

Boating

At Pleasant Hill Lake, boating enthusiasts have access to the 1.25 sq. miles of water for unlimited horsepower boating activities. This means that campers and visitors can come with their motorboats and vessels and be sure that there are no restrictions to the fun opportunities that they have. Although there is no boat launch at the dam on the lake, there’s one near the marina, so boaters can commence their adventure from there. Canoeing opportunities are available to those that want to enjoy it at Mohican River, considered as one of the best rivers for canoeing in the State of Ohio.

Fishing

Fishing opportunities are available to campers and visitors at Pleasant Hill Lake. Angling enthusiasts can access the areas open to fishing from the Pleasant Hill Dam Day Use Areas from where they can catch fish above and below the dam. Restrooms, a picnic area, and parking lot are available around the fishing area to enhance the experience. As you proceed to the dam, beware of steep concrete steps and exercise caution so that your walk can be safe. Additional fishing opportunities are available at Mohican River.

Hiking

There are two trails at Pleasant Hill Lake managed by the US Army Corps of Engineers. These trails are short and extend from the Day Use Area in the park to the extensive trails that are managed by Mohican State Park. The first of the two trails is very steep and lies on the 100+' face of the dam, so you should expect a challenging walk. The other trail will take you into the woods where you’ll see fine scenic vistas. Overall, both trails are easy to moderately challenging to stroll and you should pack your best hiking boots for the adventure.

Off-Season

Picnicking

Located just adjacent to the dam, the Pleasant Hill Dam Day Use Area is a great spot for picnicking at this COE park. There are picnic tables and picnic shelters provided under many shade trees in the area, with the grassy picnic areas bounded on one side by beautiful rock cliffs. These provide a wonderful backdrop for campers as they enjoy their meals. In addition, water fountains provide beautiful sceneries for visitors in the area. There is a restroom and kiosk available in the day-use area too.

Bicycling

Although the use of bicycles and all-terrain vehicles is not allowed in the immediate areas of the dam on the COE property, campers and visitors with bikes can proceed to Mohican State Park, where there are plenty of opportunities to ride and enjoy.
At Mohican State Park, there is an eight-mile-long trail dedicated for bikes. So, there is no shortage of riding opportunities. Besides, there are plenty of bicycle trails in the surrounding areas. So, don’t leave your bikes at home if you fancy cycling.

Swimming

There are no dedicated or designated swimming areas at Pleasant Hill Dam for campers and visitors who wish to take a summer dip in the park’s waters. However, enthusiasts can swim in the lake at their own risk and exercise caution while doing so. Meanwhile, you should look out for the designated swimming area by the lake managed by the Muskingum Watershed Conservancy District for a more enjoyable swimming experience.
