Nestled in the rolling hills of West Virginia, Stonewall Jackson Lake is a US Army Corps of Engineers park that sits within a historically significant region and beautiful natural setting. This lake park is easily accessible by RVs, trailers, and cars via Interstate 79, and provides the ideal setting for relaxation, pleasure and refreshing getaways.
Some of the recreational opportunities that visitors and campers engage in at Stonewall Jackson Lake include boating, water skiing, and canoeing. Fishing is another popular activity at this park. The lake is considered one of the best places to angle for crappie, bass, and muskellunge. Hiking trails also offer nature observers opportunities to discover the hidden beauties within and around the park’s areas. Other equally satisfying activities at Stonewall Jackson Lake include hunting, sightseeing, and picnicking. Burnsville Lake and Stonewall Jackson State Park are nearby attractions to this COE park.

Transportation

Driving

Located three miles south of Weston, Stonewall Jackson Lake sits on the West Fork River in West Virginia. This COE park can be easily accessed by RVs, trailers, and other motorized vehicles. There are no driving restrictions within the park. Vacationers and visitors can find trailers and rig rentals at Weston.

Parking

Parking spaces are available for vacationers and visitors at and around Stonewall Jackson Lake. Overnight parking facilities are also available.

Public Transportation

There are no direct public transportation services to Stonewall Jackson Lake.

Reservations camping

Stonewall Jackson State Park

Stonewall Jackson State Park features a pet-friendly campground with amenities and facilities for tents and RVs/trailers. At the campground, there are 40 RV campsites all equipped with full hookup options (electric, water, and sewer hookups) for rigs. Six tent-only campsites are also available.

The campsites are available by reservation and consist of amenities such as Wi-Fi, restrooms, showers, picnic shelter, and firewood. The RV length limit is 50 feet.

In-Season

Boating

Stonewall Jackson Lake offers campers and guests at the park excellent opportunities to enjoy water-based recreational activities such as boating, canoeing, and water skiing. Boat launch facilities are available for boating enthusiasts around the lake in the park, providing easy access to the lake for all who fancy exploring the park’s waters. Many inlets and backwater areas are available along the lake’s shoreline which are frequently explored by paddlers and canoeists. These areas are designated minimum wake zones.

Fishing

This US Army Corps of Engineers park is a premier destination for fishing, owing to the fact that the lake in the park is considered one of the best waters for crappie and muskellunge fishing in West Virginia. Anglers can fish from the lakeshore or from boats launched from any of the ramps. Bass fishing is also a popular activity on the lake. All anglers and visitors require a valid West Virginia fishing license to fish on the lake.

Hiking

There are several scenic trails available at and around Stonewall Jackson Lake. These trails offer the chance for visitors to explore the lakeside and park areas, owing to the fact that they go through wildlife habitats, shoreline areas and other scenic spots in the area.

One of these trails is the Lakeside Nature Trail which follows the lake and meanders along Carrion Bay taking hikers to remote areas. Autumn Lake Brooke Trail is yet another trail that hikers love to stroll on when visiting Stonewall Jackson Lake.

Off-Season

Hunting

Wildlife enthusiasts always have something fun to do at Stonewell Jackson Lake, be it watching the diverse fauna in the park, taking photographs, or hunting game present within the wildlife management area. As long as you possess the necessary license(s), you’ll be permitted to hunt on all the designated hunting spaces within the park. Only the recreation areas and places designated closed to hunting are not open to public hunting by campers and visitors. The West Virginia Division of Natural Resources manages the public hunting areas.

Sightseeing

There are plenty of sights to see at and around Stonewall Jackson Lake, particularly in the surrounding towns and villages. One attraction is the Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum, a Civil War-era hospital which doubles as the largest hand-cut stone masonry building in the US. The asylum is open to guided tours that teach a lot of history about the building.
Other wonderful attractions to visit include Appalachian Glass, The Museum of the American Glass, Mountaineer Military Museum, and Lambert’s Vintage Winery

Stonewall Resort

Located at the nearby Stonewall Jackson State Park is Stonewall Resort, a beautiful spot with an Adirondack-style lodge and recreational amenities. RV campers and guests at Stonewall Jackson Lake can take a short trip to this resort to enjoy activities such as swimming, golfing, and other water sports. A marina is available where boaters and anglers can get supplies and rentals. A fitness center and spa is also provided for guests at the US Army Corps of Engineers.
