Introduction

Sited along the Trinity River System, with riparian bottomland forest, cypress swamps, fresh and saltwater marshes, as well as several lakes, rivers, pools, and streams, Wallisville Lake is every nature lover’s paradise. This US Army Corps of Engineers park, located south of Wallisville in Texas, offers amazing recreational opportunities for guests who want to enjoy the outdoors.
Things to do at Wallisville include angling for various fish species such as yellow bullhead catfish (weighing up to 66 pounds), bull sharks, and redfish cavort; nature observation and photography; and bird viewing. Visitors who fancy hunting and are appropriately licensed can also hunt geese and ducks in the park. With the right permit, feral hogs can also be hunted in the park. The chance to enjoy close-up views of the marshes and river banks habitats within the park are offered to guests who explore the JJ Mayes Wildlife Terrace. Moreover, excellent recreational opportunities are provided at Trinity River Island Recreation Area.
There are no RV campgrounds at this US COE park. However, if you fancy exploration, you should visit the Trinity River National Wildlife Refuge and Anahuac National Wildlife Refuge nearby.

Transportation

Driving

Located south of Wallisville, along Trinity River, Texas, Wallisville Lake can be accessed by RVs and trailers off East Fairway 10, along local access roads. Vacationers coming from Anahuac will also find driving routes that connect to the park. RV and trailer rentals are available at Anahuac and Sam Houston National Forest.

Parking

There are parking spaces for vacationers and guests at and around Wallisville Lake for RVs, trailers and cars at designated parking spots and at the campgrounds. Overnight parking facilities are also available.

There are no direct public transportation services to Wallisville Lake.

Reservations camping

Sam Houston National Forest

RV camping opportunities are available at Sam Houston National Forest for vacationers who visit Wallisville Lake. Three developed campgrounds are available, two of which are reservable. More than 130 campsites are present at the National Forest, and amenities such as restrooms, flush toilets, picnic tables, potable water, and fire pits are available. Recreational opportunities include fishing, mountain biking, hiking, and boating.

Full hookups, partial hookups, and no hookup campsites are available for RV vacationers who take the trip to the national forest. The RV length limit is 100 feet.

In-Season

Fishing

Wallisville Lake’s waters present the opportunity for anglers to find their heart’s desires, owing to the fact that various species of fish are available in the lake. Depending on the movement of fish, winds, and tides, fishermen can catch freshwater species and saltwater species in the lake. Some of the commonly caught fish by campers and anglers in the park include yellow bullhead catfish (up to 66 pounds), bull sharks, and redfish. A valid State fishing license is required to angle at the park.

Nature Observation

Wallisville Lake is home to beautiful wonders of nature and plants that decorate the park’s corridors. The park features bottomland forests, marshes, streams, pools, and swamps that serve as natural habitats for various fish and wildlife species. These habitats therefore present nature lovers with excellent opportunities to observe and take pictures of scenic settings.
Also, large and small mammals find shelter and forage within the park’s vegetation offering wildlife viewing opportunities. Look out for the American alligator!

Birding

Bird watchers regard Wallisville Lake as a premier destination for viewing various species of birds. Thanks to this US Army Corps of Engineers park’s partnership with the Gulf Coast Bird Observatory, the park is a crucial habitat for resident bird species as well as neotropical migrants.

These birds migrate along the Trinity River corridor both from the north and the south. There are 12 species of nesting colonial waterbirds at the Mouth of the Trinity River Waterbird Rookery. A good place to begin the birdwatching adventure is at the Visitor Center.

Off-Season

Hunting

There are good opportunities to hunt for game at Wallisville Lake. Even though hunting is only limited to the waterfowl season for geese and ducks, RV campers and guests who fancy the sport still enjoy memorable recreation. Some areas in the park are closed to hunting.

Day-use and permitted seasonal blind hunting opportunities are open to licensed hunters for waterfowl. Because only ducks and geese are the huntable game, campers are not allowed to go after feral hogs, except when park rangers issue permits for them.

JJ Mayes Wildlife Trace

A beautiful place to explore while camping at Wallisville Lake is the JJ Mayes Wildlife Trace. This trace extends for four miles at the top of the levee in the park along the west bank of the Trinity River. Your visit to this trace will offer you the chance to see up-close the marshes and river banks habitats within the park, as well as the wildlife that resides here.
What’s more, there’s a picnic area at the entrance of the trace where you can share meals with family and/or friends before or after exploring the area.

Trinity River Island Recreation Area

Trinity River Island Recreation Area is an island at Wallisville Lake that presents RV campers and guests exciting opportunities to enjoy a host of outdoor activities. Equipped with modern facilities, this recreation area is a popular site at the park. Some of the amenities you’ll find at this recreation area include picnic tables (covered and uncovered), a boat ramp, fishing access areas, and restrooms. What’s more, all the facilities are ADA accessible. Trash cans, a life jacket loaner station, and parking lots are also available.
