Encompassing low hills and plains along the Gulf of Mexico, Mississippi is renowned for its hospitality and blues music traditions. It shares its borders with Tennessee, Alabama, Louisiana, and Arkansas while featuring stunning landscapes and several significant Civil War-era sites. Mississippi centers around its state capital, Jackson, which has become known as the "Crossroads of the South" and is clustered with fine museums and cultural institutions.
Mississippi became part of the Union in 1817, only to declare its secession in 1861 before being restored to the Union following the Civil War. It served as the site of many prominent events during the Civil Rights movement, with African Americans comprising a large percentage of the population before the 1930's Great Migration.
The Mississippi Delta sprawls across the northwest region of the state while its highest point, Woodall Mountain, rises to just 807 feet. But despite this, the state still boasts plenty of protected parks and recreational reserves that make it a popular place to rent an RV while enjoying the region's enviable subtropical climate.
