A somberness overcame me as I thought about returning to a “life” of routine and paychecks.A naïve and stubborn heart of mine remained back somewhere in the misty mountains of the Yukon. I nearly turned around the way I came, leaving what I have always known.Enough about my adventure… Here are the keys, what will yours be?Other things to noteThis vehicle is 27 years old, it is functional, comfortable and safe, but it is no beauty queen. It has some quirks (don't we all). I use this van myself for my own adventures around Alaska. I hope it provides you with as much joy as it has me on my trips.

Review summary

Flexible & highly communicative host
Eric offers airport delivery/pickup, accommodates early/late schedules, provides detailed van walkthroughs, and offers helpful local suggestions. He checks in mid-trip.
Drives with some older quirks
An older, noisy van that occasionally stalls during turns or in reverse; it reliably travels to destinations but requires driver adjustment. Some reviewers reported doors not sealing and a consistent check engine light.

5.0Eric is one of the best hosts to come across on Outdoorsy. My experience with him and Nanook was phenomenal. His patience and understanding is abundant, because he still participates in the boondocking life. Next time you need a personal abode to get around the greater Anchorage area, look to the Badass Adventure Vans.

4.0This is a great camper if you’re ready for outdoor camping with some hard sides. While it certainly did the trick, we felt like there were some issues we weren’t prepared for. For example, the doors don’t fully seal. When it dropped below freezing one night, we were VERY cold. Eric had an extra sleeping bag, which helped, but we didn’t expect to need it. The doors also only unlock from each individual exterior door, so you have to walk all the way around to let any passengers in. Last improvement I’d have loved to see was some privacy covers on the windows. There is a curtain separating the bed for when you sleep, but it’s not fully enclosed and the back windows are still exposed. Eric was super helpful, responsive, and friendly. He was a great “vanlord” (like a landlord but for a van).

5.0Great vehicle for the price! It's not new and showing it's age, but the car loves outdoors, felt pretty good and capable on the road. We had it for a week, went to Seward, then took a ferry to Valdez and drove to Wrangel-st Elias National Park and then to Denali. Positives: 1. the host, Eric, is very nice and flexible in terms of picking us up and dropping off. Having vehicle delivered to the airport door is awesome. 2. Very well equipped for camping: all essentials: water, shower, poortable toilet, shower, electric station with power enough to boil an electric kettle, gas stove, bear spray, camping seats and table and many many more I forgot to mention. 3. Comfortable bed and enough of warm blankets. 4. Best rearview mirror than in anybcar I've had. It's important) Negatives? It's an older truck, so it's noisy and has some scratches. Has some quirks while driving in town, but it didn't bother us at all. Overall we had a blast on the road and while camping

5.0We had an amazing experience renting Eric’s minivan for our Alaska trip! The minivan was very comfortable and perfectly equipped for living and cooking on the road. Eric even provided two fishing rods with tackle, which was such a great bonus! We didn’t feel like we needed to buy anything extra during our journey — everything was already included. Eric kindly met us, gave us a ride, and even allowed us a bit of extra time during the day to finish our errands, which we greatly appreciated. Thank you so much, Eric! Everything was perfect, and Alaska is absolutely breathtaking!

Frequently asked questions
Q.
Is boondocking in Alaska possible, or do I have to stay at campgrounds?
A.
Boondocking in Alaska is possible, in a large part because of how remote most parts of Alaska is. You can find turnouts and creative camping spots when outside the city of Anchorage. While in Anchorage, Cabelas at 155 W 104th Ave, Anchorage, AK 99515 offers free overnight stays. There are many State campgrounds as well, most of which are $20 per night.
Q.
Are there any restricted roads I can travel, such as gravel roads?
A.
Certain highways in Alaska that go to more remote communities are not regularly maintained by the State of Alaska and can be very rough. I do not restrict the use of any roads with the van, but if you plan to use these roads, an additional $500 security deposit is necessary. Dempster, Denali, Dalton, Elliot, Steese, Taylor, McCarthy
Q.
Where can I shower?
A.
The van comes with a basic portable shower (unheated) for outside use. The van comes with a privacy tent, and the shower can be used in a pinch or for those who don't mind a cold shower. In Anchorage there are gyms, such as Planet Fitness. There are also campgrounds throughout Alaska with showers. Bear in mind, Anchorage is the only major city accessible by road other than Fairbanks, so when traveling out of town, prepare to be more independent.
