Nestled in the Sierra Nevada Mountains in Grass Valley, the park is the site of one of California’s oldest, deepest, and richest gold mines. The mine was in operation for over 100 years, and over 5.8 million ounces of gold were extracted from it until it closed in 1956. The park encompasses 856 acres, 367 miles of abandoned and flooded mine shafts, and more than 14 miles of multi-purpose trails.South Yuba River State Park is another incredible place and offers something for everyone. Tucked in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, the park is home to four historic bridges, a wheelchair-accessible wilderness trail, and miles of hiking trails. Other popular activities at the state park include swimming, mountain biking, gold panning, and fishing. Because the park is home to a large number of birds, birdwatching is popular here too. Keep your eyes peeled for bald eagles, American dippers, hermit thrush, belted kingfisher, and more. Railroads played a huge role in the westward expansion of the United States. You can learn more about the impact of the railroad at the Nevada County Narrow Gauge Railroad Museum in Nevada City, California. The museum seeks to preserve local transportation history through its exhibits and artifacts. Embark on a docent-led tour through the rail yard, a historical tour through the museum, and a visit to the restoration shop. Check out things like an early steam automobile, the NCNCRR Engine 5, rolling stock, and more. Before you leave, check out the gift shop, which sells things like railroad-themed books, toys, gifts, clothing, collectibles, and other items to help commemorate your visit.Another place to consider, especially if you have kids, is the KidZone Museum in Truckee. The playful children’s museum has interactive indoor and outdoor exhibits. Most exhibits are designed for children ages seven and up and aim to help them build their social, creative, physical, and cognitive skills. Let kids explore the fairy tale world in the “Once Upon a Time” exhibit, or let them enhance their gross motor skills in the indoor play structure. Check out the art studio, a science lab, a nature play area, and more. There’s also an infant area for children under 18 months old.If you don’t have children or want to take a little break from them, there are several wineries in the area. Sample locally grown wines and then take a few bottles home to add to your collection. Take in views of the area while enjoying a glass of wine.
