The Great Outdoors

Situated not too far away near Alma, Harlan County Lake is a must-visit when RV camping at Pioneer Village Campground. On the Republican River, the lake is classed as Nebraska's second-largest, with 75 miles of shoreline and over 13,000 surface acres of water. Nine developed sites around the lake provide ample recreation opportunities, including RV camping. Fishing, boating, and water skiing are all popular activities. Thanks to its location on the Central American Flyway, the lake is a prime destination for bird spotting, welcoming millions of migratory birds every year. In fact, over 300 different bird species have been spotted at Harlan County Lake, including golden eagles, osprey, and snow geese. Take the Pheasant Ridge Trail for a three-mile stroll along the shoreline and enjoy the scenic vistas and local wildlife spotting.Windmill State Park is another great place to visit when you rent a camper near Pioneer Village Campground. Between Kearney and Grand Island at the Gibbon interchange, this park is one of the highlights of the area's unique chain of islands that stretches along Interstate 80. Visitors can admire the assortment of fully restored, historic windmills after which the park is named. The tallest, an old railroad windmill, is over 60 feet tall. Stop for a picnic, there are plenty of tables and grills available, or stay over at one of the many dedicated RV camping sites.Drive just a little farther down the interstate to Doniphan and spend the day exploring Mormon Island State Recreation Area. There are excellent wildlife viewing opportunities all year round; however, the park is famous for its congregations of hundreds of thousands of sandhill cranes that stop on their migratory route every spring. There are also ample recreational opportunities on the two lakes, ideal for both fishing and boating. Cool off or just relax at one of the designated swimming beaches equipped with shower houses. Take a stroll along one of the many hiking trails or park your campervan rental at one of the RV camping sites and prolong your visit.

Exploring the Area

Of course, you can't go RV camping at Pioneer Village Campground without actually visiting Pioneer Village itself, one of the area's most famous attractions. Classed as one of the largest collections of Americana, there is something to interest everyone at Pioneer Village, with more than 50,000 objects on display in over 25 buildings. Organized chronologically from the 1830s to the present day, either take your time and browse through all of the collections and displays or home in on a particular era that interests you. There is also a restaurant and gift shop to visit on-site for food and souvenirs.If you would like to find out more about the local area's rich past, stop by the Kearney County Historical Museum, located just a short distance from the campground. Four historical buildings house a vast collection of local artifacts and exhibitions, with some pieces dating back to the Civil War. Photos and printed materials will give you valuable insights into bygone times in Kearney County. Visiting the buildings themselves also provides an authentic historical experience, including one of the first train depots in the county, the first school in Minden, and the county's first post office and store all housing exhibits.Fort Kearney Park and Recreational Area is another must-visit destination in your Minden camper rental. Built back in 1848 as protection for travelers using the Oregon-California Trail, the fort has also served as an important staging station as well as providing shelter for those building the Union Pacific Railroad. Today, the fort and its surroundings are a state historical park. You can visit authentically reconstructed buildings such as the stockade, parade ground, and blacksmith workshop to get a feel for what life was actually like living in the fort. The park's interpretive center displays exhibits alongside a video about the fort and its occupants. Aside from history, there are also plenty of recreational activities to get involved with, including fishing, swimming, and camping. Yes. Class A’s, Class B’s, and Class C’s and five-Wheels typically have bathrooms. Depending on where you plan on camping, you’ll want to double-check the availability of restrooms if selecting a rig without a bathroom. Nervous about renting an RV with a bathroom? How does check-in work?

Once an Owner approves your RV reservation, you can coordinate a time to pick up your rig or have it delivered to your doorstep or campsite. At that point, the owner will do a key exchange with you and walk you through the RV and answer any questions you might have.
