The Great Outdoors

Camp in an RV near Jackson and spend a day exploring the Colliers Mills Wildlife Management Area, which sprawls across almost 13,000 acres on the southern edge of the RV park. It forms part of the New Jersey Pinelands National Reserve, with large tracts of pitch pine, scrub oak, and white cedar swamps. There are numerous walking trails where you can escape for a bit of solitude while keeping your eyes peeled for myriad bird species that frequent the area along the Atlantic Flyway. Drive in the other direction from the campground, and you’ll arrive at the Assunpink Wildlife Management Area, which lies in the geographic heart of New Jersey. It provides a haven for wildlife and migrating birds while being a recreational hub for fishing, boating, kayaking, horseback riding, and hiking. Mountain biking is permitted during the summer months, with seasonal hunting also available. State-threatened long-eared owls inhabit the area, as do American woodcocks, brown thrashers, and pied-billed grebe.Camping at Timberland Lake Campground is also a good base for visiting Turkey Swamp Park, which lies around 15 minutes’ drive to the east. It encompasses the northern fringe of the Pine Barrens and the headwaters of numerous river and creek systems where boating and fishing are also possible. Bass, bluegill, and catfish can all be caught in the 17-acre lake, with canoeing and paddle boating among the other recreational pursuits. Around eight miles of trails also wind through the park while the lake freezes over for ice-skating during the winter months.

Exploring the City

Jackson campers can pick up grocery supplies in nearby Holmeson where the Jackson Premium Outlets are situated. There are local gas stations if you need to fill up your RV rental, as well as numerous eateries and fast-food restaurants for dining out. Closer to Timberland Lake Campground is Six Flags Great Adventure, which first opened to the public in 1974. Aside from the 125-acre Great Adventure Park, it’s also home to the 350-acre Wild Safari animal park, making it one of the largest theme parks in the world. Wander through the early-American-themed Main Street and soak up the magical feel of the Fantasy Forest, then get your thrills on the classic family rides of Adventure Alley. Also within the theme park is Movie Town, which is designed as a Hollywood back-lot complete with film-themed rides, shops, and attractions. Adjacent to the park is the Six Flags Wild Safari where you can embark on the Safari Off Road Adventure. This self-drive attraction allows you to get up close to big-game African species, including elephants, rhinos, and lions. Mid-way through, you can disembark in Camp Aventura to explore the park’s bird and reptile collections, as well as hand-feed the resident giraffes. Timberland Lake Campground can also be used as a base for visiting Trenton, which serves as the capital of New Jersey and the seat of Mercer County. It’s home to the New Jersey State House whose period-furnished chambers can be visited on guided tours. Delve into the state’s cultural, natural, and artistic history at the New Jersey State Museum, which also features a planetarium and displays detailing archaeological finds in the region. Another museum not to miss is the Old Barracks Museum, which is the only remaining colonial barracks in New Jersey. It brings the state’s colonial and revolutionary history to life, with costumed characters and recreated rooms.Whether you want to birdwatch in the New Jersey Pinelands National Reserve or enjoy the family-friendly attractions of Six Flags Great Adventure, book an RV in Ocean County and start planning your next vacation!

Questions about RVs?

Q.

What type of RV should I choose?

A.

Start by determining how many people are planning to travel with you. Going on a solo-journey? Choose a camper van or a teardrop trailer. Bringing the whole family along for the ride? Consider a spacious Class A or five-wheel.

You’ll also want to consider amenities. For example, if you’re planning to cook on the road, you’ll want a kitchenette. If your campground doesn’t have public restrooms, you’ll want to search RVs with bathrooms. Check out full descriptions of our models to help you decide here.

Q.

Do the RVs have bathrooms?

A.

Yes. Class A’s, Class B’s, and Class C’s and five-Wheels typically have bathrooms. Depending on where you plan on camping, you’ll want to double-check the availability of restrooms if selecting a rig without a bathroom. Nervous about renting an RV with a bathroom? Owners can help show you how to clean the tank or will offer to do it for you for a fee.

Q.

How does check-in work?

A.

Once an Owner approves your RV reservation, you can coordinate a time to pick up your rig or have it delivered to your doorstep or campsite. At that point, the owner will do a key exchange with you and walk you through the RV and answer any questions you might have.
