The Great Outdoors

This stunning park consists of a ten-mile-long barrier island just off the coast of New Jersey. With white sandy beaches and diverse flora, this island is ideal for hikers, with eight miles of seaside trails to discover. Watersports are very popular here, and during the summer, a mile-long stretch of beach is dedicated to bathing. Surf fishing is also popular, and anglers commonly catch weakfish, flounders, and striped bass in these waters. If you're feeling more adventurous, try your hand at surfing or scuba diving.One of the best historical parks near Jackson is Allaire State Park. This park contains the remains of Allaire Village, which was once important to the region's iron trade. Guests can wander through the village and learn about its history at the visitor center. Train fanatics will want to visit the Pine Creek Railroad, where several antique trains are still parked. The Manasquan River also meanders through a section of the park. It is a favorite spot for canoeing and fishing, with trout being the most commonly caught fish.Another popular state park full of history is Double Trouble State Park. This 8,000-acre park features a section of New Jersey's beautiful Pine Barrens, as well as the remains of an old farming village. This museum is one of the largest in the country and features over 240,000 pieces, with especially well-respected holdings of Asian, European, and American art. The museum's permanent collection holds paintings by world-famous artists, including Vincent van Gogh, El Greco, and Claude Monet.Philadelphia is a city full of history, and one of the most intriguing historical sites is Eastern State Penitentiary. Once one of the largest and most expensive prisons in the country, this penitentiary housed infamous criminals such as gangster Al Capone and bank robber Willie Sutton. The prison closed its doors in 1971, and since then has been open for tours. Visitors can explore the cell blocks, wander around the yard, and much more. The jail is also believed to be haunted, and visitors can book overnight paranormal investigations if they're feeling brave enough.
