Hickory Nut Falls Family Campground is located near the small town of Chimney Rock, in the far western region of North Carolina. The nearest larger town is Hendersonville, which is around 15 miles to the southwest, while the nearest larger city is Asheville, at around 25 miles to the northwest. The big city of Charlotte is about 100 miles to the east. This portion of the state is located within the forested Blue Ridge Mountains and sits less than 25 miles from the state border with South Carolina and only around 50 miles from the border with Tennessee.The campground is located just off US 64, one of the main roads through the local area, so you should have no trouble finding it. Hickory Nut Falls Family Campground is also situated on the banks of the nearby Broad River, so water access is easily available, as well. Some of the campsites even sit right next to the river, offering prime water views. The campground is open around the first of April through the end of October, and full-hookup sites are available.With a stay at this family-friendly campground in western North Carolina, you should have no trouble finding any services your group could need or want. One of its main draws is a towering, hollowed-out rock. It resembles a chimney and hence is the park's namesake. At the summit, you will find a gift shop and restaurant. There is also an observation platform that offers expansive views of the surrounding area. There are also hiking trails here, some that take visitors to picturesque waterfalls. One of these was made famous as it was the filming site of a portion of the movie, Last of the Mohicans.Lake Lure sits just to the east of the campground. Here you can enjoy water-based activities such as boating, swimming, and fishing spots. There are numerous fingers, coves, and waterways that branch off this body of water, as well. These are good to explore by paddleboats, such as a canoe or kayak. You will find plenty of scenic places to have a picnic lunch with your family, and you never know when local wildlife may make an appearance.
