The Great Outdoors

The green mountains to the north and the south beckon all nature lovers and outdoor adventurers. Hike, bike, horseback ride, or hunt (when seasonally permitted). Find a fishing hole and cast a fly into the crystal clear waters in the never-ending pursuit of the best trophy trout or bass. Head deep into the bowels of the earth at Bristol Caverns. Bristol Caverns is one of the oldest and longest tours in Tennessee. Visitors are guided through three separate levels of caves, including an underground river that Native Americans were known to use to launch surprise attacks on their unsuspecting enemies on the surface. The stalagmites and stalactites in this cave system are so old that some have merged to form solid columns, which is a rare event because it takes hundreds of thousands of years, if not more, for the rock formations to grow enough to touch. The Iron Mountains Range looms large to the south. There are dozens of state parks and forests that sprawl across its slopes. A 100-mile portion of the mighty Appalachian Trail, which stretches over 2,000 miles from Maine to Georgia, passes through and over the Iron Mountains. The Virginia Creeper Trail adds another 35 miles of recreational fun. Hikers, bikers, and horseback riders can follow the historic trail from Abingdon, VA, to Whitetop, VA, which largely follows the contours of valleys. The trail crosses over a handful of historic wooden trestle bridges on its very long journey in between the two towns.Bays Mountain Park and Planetarium is a 3,600-acre park at which adventurers can observe beavers building dams along the river. There is also a nature center at which wolves, bobcats, and raptors reside as they recover from their injuries. The park also features a state-of-art planetarium that is regularly updated with the latest information about faraway galaxies and nebulas. The $1.3-million planetarium theater is so accurate that visitors can use binoculars to see details on distant planets and other celestial objects.

Exploring the Area

An advantage of renting a motorhome is it makes traveling from town to town a painless experience. Though Tennessee towns are small and remote, they all have interesting sights and charms for visitors to explore. A few miles north of Johnson City, TN, is Gray Fossil Site, a natural history museum. It’s one of the few facilities in the country at which visitors can participate in an actual dig (albeit a staged one). Visitors get hands-on experience with the tools, techniques, and technologies that paleontologists use to learn about their discoveries. On-site are several genuine fossils found in Tennessee, like a saber-tooth cat, tapir, alligator, short-faced bear, and even a mastodon.Continue the tour of the ancient past with a stop at Backyard Terrors and Dinosaur Park in Bluff City. The backyard exhibition is primarily a dinosaur park that transforms into a Halloween-themed park in October. There are over 40 lifelike dinosaurs roaming the grounds, ready to pounce on an unwary visitor.Kick up your heels outside a camper rental and roast s’ mores over a crackling campfire. Listen to frogs croaking and distant owls hooting in the woods. On a clear summer evening, look to the sky. The mountain ridges on either side of the valley block a large portion of light pollution, and it’s sometimes possible to observe the Milky way faintly shimmering across the sky.

Whether you’re on or off the grid, you have options when it comes to powering your RV. Here are the pros and cons for each.

Questions about RVs?

Q.

What type of RV should I choose?

A.

Start by determining how many people are planning to travel with you. Going on a solo-journey? Choose a camper van or a teardrop trailer. Bringing the whole family along for the ride? Consider a spacious Class A or five-wheel.

You’ll also want to consider amenities. For example, if you’re planning to cook on the road, you’ll want a kitchenette. If your campground doesn’t have public restrooms, you’ll want to search RVs with bathrooms. Check out full descriptions of our models to help you decide here.

Q.

Do the RVs have bathrooms?

A.

Yes. Class A’s, Class B’s, and Class C’s and five-Wheels typically have bathrooms. Depending on where you plan on camping, you’ll want to double-check the availability of restrooms if selecting a rig without a bathroom. Nervous about renting an RV with a bathroom? Owners can help show you how to clean the tank or will offer to do it for you for a fee.

Q.

How does check-in work?

A.

Once an Owner approves your RV reservation, you can coordinate a time to pick up your rig or have it delivered to your doorstep or campsite. At that point, the owner will do a key exchange with you and walk you through the RV and answer any questions you might have.
