Monahans Sandhills is located near Monahans, TX, which is in the rural, western portion of the state. The campground is situated just off of I-20, so you should have no trouble locating it. The nearest larger town is Odessa, at around 30 miles to the northeast, and the campground lies only around 50 miles from the border the state shares with neighboring New Mexico. The campground sits at about the midpoint between Abilene, to the east, and El Paso, to the west, at over 200 miles to each.Monahans Sandhills sits within the borders of the Monahans Sandhills State Park. The campground offers sites with some hookups. Bathrooms and showers are available, as well. This part of the state of Texas is fairly flat and dry, with most of the vegetation consisting of short, scrub brush. Due to this, there isn't much shade at the park, so sunshades are also provided.With a stay at this family-friendly campground in western Texas, you should have no trouble finding any services you may need. There are a few grocery stores and gas stations in the local area. These are good places for refilling any supplies that run low. You will also find multiple restaurants dotting the downtown area, some specializing in local delicacies. The Great Outdoors

Nearby is Monahans Sandhills State Park, which is known for its namesake, the sand dunes that are found within its boundaries. Hiking is a common way to enjoy the dunes, though you can also slide down then on sand sleds! You can bring your own equipment, or sled rentals are available from the park office. Those who should note temperatures can get quite high for much of the year in this area, and be aware that there is very little shade available. Sand temperatures can also get quite hot. For these reasons, it is best to visit the dunes in the mornings and late afternoons during the hottest times of the year.The Sibley Nature Center is in Midland, which is just a little way up the road from Odessa. It offers exhibits that showcase the various animals and ecosystems that are found in the arid lands of western Texas. Educational programs are available, as well. There are also walking trails through the outdoor exhibits that allow visitors to experience some of these ecosystems.Motorhome camping at the Monahans Sandhills will make it easy for you to enjoy many different outdoor activities. The I-20 Wildlife Preserve is also in Midland. Here, walking paths meander through the local forestland and allow visitors to observe the animals that live in this region. There is also a boardwalk through a wetland area, so you can get an up-close view of some of the waterfowl that are common near here.

Exploring the Area

Book an RV in Ward County, and you will find yourself surrounded by unique places to visit. There is a visitor's center at the park. It offers exhibits that highlight the various ecosystems and animals that call the park home. They also outline how the sand dunes were created and are maintained. Rangers also offer educational programs. RV camping at this campground makes for a great base camp to explore all over the nearby area.Tour a Stonehenge Replica in Odessa, on the campus of the University of Texas. It was built to resemble the famous prehistoric site located in England. There are walking paths that help you easily view the monoliths. There is also information that explains how both this and the original site in the United Kingdom came to be.There are several historical sites found in that same town. The Presidential Archives and Leadership Library features details from the lives and careers of the various presidents who have helped to form and lead our country. The Historic White-Pool House is an event center that is located within a historic home in the area. Call to schedule a tour around events that are occurring. The Chris Kyle "American Sniper" Memorial is dedicated to a local man and war hero.
