Am I allowed to travel locally in Florida during coronavirus?

On April 1, 2020, in reaction to the increase of coronavirus cases in Florida, Governor Ron DeSantis released a document outlining Florida travel restrictions for COVID-19 to help control the spread of the virus. Because this information evolves daily, the very latest on Florida coronavirus travel restrictions updates continuously on the Florida Health COVID-19 website.

Traveling in Florida during the coronavirus outbreak

Traveling locally in Florida during the coronavirus outbreak is permitted under a number of conditions. The state has defined essential travel reasons and essential activities that allow you to travel during the coronavirus outbreak in Florida.

Essential activities allowed in Florida under coronavirus restrictions

Some jobs and businesses are classified as essential, and traveling is permitted for the purposes of work. As an RVer, you might be more interested in travel for leisure reasons, of course, but it helps to know all of the rules regardless of why you might want or need to travel.

You might be wondering, “Am I allowed to travel within Florida?” Here is a shortlist to help you decide. You may travel to:

  • attend a religious service
  • participate in recreational activities
  • take care of pets
  • care for or assist a loved one or friend.

The above list is quite restrictive, but it does allow traveling within Florida during the COVID-19 outbreak for specific reasons. This list might leave you wondering, especially if you are a full-time RVer, where can you take your RV in Florida right now during the COVID-19 stay-at-home order??

Which private RV Campgrounds can stay open under Florida coronavirus rules?

Some counties have reported separately as follows:

  • Brevard County — closed to new arrivals at private RV parks.
  • Broward County — open. Private RV parks and campgrounds in this county are classified as essential services.
  • Miami-Dade County — open. Private RV parks and campgrounds in this county are classified as essential services.
  • Monroe County — open to residents of the county. No new arrivals are allowed. If you are already on-site, you can remain if your reservation extends more than 28 days.
  • Orange County — open. Private RV parks and campgrounds in this county are classified as essential services.

Florida state park and forest campgrounds

With very few exceptions, all state park and state forest campgrounds in Florida are closed due to the Florida coronavirus traveling regulations.

Florida COVID-19 restrictions while RV camping

Since a limited amount of travel is permitted in Florida under the current coronavirus regulations, you might wonder what happens once you arrive at an RV park?

The answer is pretty much the same rules as if you were at home. Keep social distancing to a minimum of six feet apart, and don’t gather in large groups, except for specific religious group exemptions. Only travel for essentials, such as shopping or exercise.

Look forward to RV camping in Florida

Yes, it’s tough out there at the moment, and it is a difficult situation for everyone. But, this pandemic will pass, and we’ll soon be able to get back on the road. Once the travel restrictions are lifted, here are some great places to rent an RV in Florida.

At the heart of the state is Orlando, with its many amusement and theme parks in the area. Orlando is a fun place for solo travelers and family RVers. If the great outdoors is more your scene, then the spectacular Everglades National Park is at the tip of the state, close to Miami and Key West. Florida is a beautiful state with plenty to explore, and you won’t tire of all there is to see. Here’s hoping for an excellent post-coronavirus travel season.
