Introduction

The Alabama River winds through the heart of the state of Alabama, originating just north of Montgomery. This picturesque river is home to many parks but none are quite like the Alabama River Lakes.

The Alabama River Lakes Project, under the management of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, consists of three lakes, Claiborne Lake, Woodruff Lake, and the William Dannelly Reservoir.

Nearly 31 recreation areas are situated on the banks of Alabama River Lakes, allowing the locals and tourists to enjoy this majestic river and its beautiful natural surroundings.

The most undisturbed and primitive lake is Claiborne Lake and is widely renowned for its water recreation sports. William “Bill” Dannelly Reservoir on the Black Prairie Belt offers some of the best fishing and boating opportunities in the state. Lastly, Woodruff Lake has tons to offer with something for everyone and has one of the greatest tourist flow.

Seasonal activities in Alabama River Lakes

Off-Season

Swimming

One of the most enjoyable activities at the Alabama River Lakes is swimming. Most recreation areas at the waterfront provide a designated swimming spot, away from the water sporters and their toys. A brisk swim in Lake Claiborne’s clear water will refresh you like nothing else. The excellent water quality of the region has especially come to the attention of ecologists and sportsmen and we assure you that you’ll equally enjoy it.

Birding

The Claiborne Lake Dam Site is home to a variety of bird species including indigo buntings, summer tanagers, pine warblers, and eastern bluebirds.

Lake Woodruff is more suited for indecisive birders as it provides both wetlands and woods, with red-shouldered hawks, turkey vultures, osprey, and bald eagles on the perch above, waiting for the hunt. Keep an eye out for woodpeckers in the stretch of pinewoods.

The rich lake waters and surrounding woodlands make Alabama River Lakes a must-visit destination for birdwatchers.
