Feel the thrill of adventure calling your name? Why not plan a trip to Aquilla Lake? It's a great place to visit on your next RV vacation.
Aquilla Lake is a manmade body of water found in Hill County, Texas. The dam was built to provide flood control for the Brazos River Basin and is situated 23 miles from the big metropolis of Waco. In addition to providing protection against excess rain, Aquilla Lake is also part of the area water supply and is a popular spot for recreational activities. Among the most interesting things to do at this vacation hotspot include boating, fishing, hunting, and the viewing of wildlife.
Aquilla Lake rests in what is known as the Prairies and Lakes region of the state. The grounds are alive with an extremely diverse terrain that supports a rich variety of wildlife, including many species of birds and waterfowl such as quail, doves, mallard and wood ducks, widgeons, shovelers, pintails, and gadwalls. Hunting is permitted in the region with turkey, feral hog, and quail among the most popular game.
This body of water is found only ten short miles from the little town of Aquilla. For those traveling to this recreational area from the Dallas airport, the drive takes approximately 90 minutes in total.
For a fantastic time at a scenic rural retreat, load up the RV and head out to spend some time at Aquilla Lake. It's the perfect spot for a relaxing holiday.

Transportation

Driving

Travel to Aquilla Lake proceeds along country roads of two lane construction. In general, the highways are in good condition, and road construction occurs on occasion. Traffic continues to move fluidly year round. Wildlife does occasionally wander into the roadways, so drive with caution to avoid an accident.

Parking

Parking is available in several different spots at Aquilla Lake though there is no formally designated lot. You can park your vehicle at the campgrounds as well, but there is no RV parking at White-Tail Campground in Lake Whitney State Park.

Public Transportation

There is no public transportation available to Aquilla Lake.

Campsites in Aquilla Lake

First-come first-served

Horseshoe Campground

Horseshoe Campground is found in nearby Lake Whitney State Park and offers 52 campsites for RV and tent camping on a first-come, first-served basis. Each of the RV sites is equipped with full power, water, and sewer hookups. There are also seven sites that are set aside for more primitive style camping conditions. Leashed dogs are welcome to join their families at this campground.
Among the amenities found at Horseshoe Campground are toilets, drinking, water, and picnic tables.
Camping is permitted year-round here.

White-Tail Campground

White-Tail Campground is also found in Lake Whitney State Park. This site is reserved for tent camping only with each site available on a first-come, first-served basis.

White-Tail Campground sits nearest the recreational activities available at this popular state park. Dogs are permitted here but must remain leashed.

The amenities found on-site include showers, picnic tables, and drinking water.

In-Season

Swimming

Aquilla Lake is a much-loved haven for families who love to swim. The lake is well-renowned for its clear waters that are cool and refreshing on a hot summer's day. Bring along your bathing suit, some sunscreen, and a beach towel, and you've got everything you need for a day of sunny fun. Do take care to only enter the water during good weather conditions as swimming is not supervised here.
The sandy shoreline is an ideal place for taking a leisurely stroll. Along your travels, you can search for seaside treasures such as shells or sea glass to bring home as a keepsake of a wonderful vacation at Aquilla Lake.

Boating

One of Aquilla Lake's primary roles is as a recreational center for water sports and other activities in the summer months. There are three different boat ramps found on the premises, giving you lots of spots to choose from to get your powerboat out into the lake.
Fancy something a little more "old school?' Why not paddle out from the shore in your canoe or kayak to enjoy a day out on the water?
Be sure to slather on the sunscreen to avoid getting a burn during the hottest times of the day.

Picnicking

Aquilla Lake is an extremely picturesque locale, making it the perfect place to enjoy a picnic. Whether you fancy spreading out your lunch on one of the provided picnic tables or in the sand on the beach, you will be spoiled for choice when it comes to scenic places where you can enjoy your lunch.
The terrain is quite varied here, so be sure to wear proper walking shoes as you will need to travel a bit to find your perfect picnic spot.
Your dog may join you on your picnic lunch, but please keep them leashed and come prepared with the supplies to clean up after them and properly dispose of their waste materials.

Off-Season

Fishing

Fishing is a popular activity at Aquilla Lake, whether your visit takes place in spring, summer, winter, or fall. Among the most popular varieties of fish you will find here are largemouth bass, crappie, channel, and blue catfish, and white bass.
It is recommended that you use spinner baits, jig and pig combos, or plastic worms to see the greatest angling success here.
A fishing license is required to angle in Texas waters.
Check with park officials to see if it is permitted to fillet your fish directly on the grounds or if you must do it at home.

Wildlife viewing

Many different animals make Aquilla Lake their home. The area is a hotspot for hunting year-round, so be certain to wear orange clothing to easily set yourself apart from any game and stick to the well-marked paths for your own safety.
Among some of the animals you may discover on your visit are fox, wild boars, wild turkeys, rabbits, and deer. Bring along your camera to capture your findings.
You may also be treated to the site of some unusual types of birds and waterfowl.

Hiking

If you love to hike, you won't be disappointed with a visit to Aquilla Lake. Whether you prefer something more leisurely like a stroll along the lakeshore, or a vigorous hike through hills and rolling terrain, you will find what you seek at this great recreational area.
The land is naturally landscaped in this area and does bear both hills and valleys, making many of the hiking trails challenging to traverse. Wear appropriate shoes for hiking to prevent an injury.
