Transportation

Driving

A lengthy trip at 148 km (92 miles), the route from Nordegg, AB to Brazeau River Provincial Park is straight and direct. To follow the most common path, take Forestry Trunk Rd/AB-40 N/AB-734 N and Elk River Rd to Range Rd 140B in Yellowhead County. Continue on Range Rd 140B until you spot the park just ahead. This route is well-marked, and the two-lane highways are well-maintained. Traffic moves along swiftly with very few interruptions for road construction.

The journey from Lodgepole, AB to the park covers 76 km (47 miles) of ground. To begin this route, start out on
Drayton Valley St, taking the exit for AB-620 W. Continue along this highway until you reach the signs for Elk River Road in Yellowhead County. Head out on this highway, turning at the exit for Range Road 140 B. Remain on this path until you see your destination. The highways on this route are in good condition and are kept clear year-round. Most of the stretches of road consist of two lanes. Traffic moves well, and road construction is rarely seen.

Parking

Parking is available directly out front of this park though there is no formal parking lot.

First-come first-served

Brazeau River Campground

Brazeau River Campground is a small camping facility which offers several sites on each side of the river for RV and tent camping between May 1st and October 13th yearly. These campsites are available on a first come, first served basis. There are seven unserviced campsites for families to choose from. Generator use is permitted, and dogs are also welcome though owners are asked to keep them leashed.

A small property, each of the campsites at Brazeau River Provincial Recreation Area are lined with abundant tree cover, offering lots of privacy. Among the on-site amenities are a cooking shelter, pit toilets, firepits, firewood, water pumps, and a picnic shelter. The water is not suitable for drinking, so be sure to bring some of your own with you.

There are activities to enjoy year-round at this beautiful outdoor haven. Some of the most popular ones include fishing, swimming, OHV riding, horseback riding, cycling, canoeing, snowmobiling, and swimming.

Off-Season

Photography

An extremely scenic spot, Brazeau River Provincial Recreation Area is the ideal backdrop for family photos or capturing some candids. There is an abundance of forest which is home to many different varieties of plant and animal life.

Be sure to wear appropriate footwear and to carry drinking water with you to quench your thirst as needed.

Fishing

Fishing is a popular attraction year-round at Brazeau River Provincial Recreation Area. A secluded spot, you may find yourself the only one out on the river when the fish are biting.

Paddle out in your canoe or kayak or fish right from the shore until you catch your fill. There is a cook shelter located near to the beach where you can fillet then grill your seafood bounty for your friends and family to enjoy.

A fishing licence is required to participate in the sport at this provincial recreation area.

Winter

Snowmobiling

There are several ungroomed trails both on and off the property at Brazeau River Provincial Recreation Area that are the ideal spot for snowmobiling when the snow starts to fly. Because these trails are used for multiple purposes, you will need to keep an eye for other people navigating the paths on foot or horseback.

Be sure to bundle up against the Canadian winter chill. Bring along appropriate fluids such as drinking water and hot coffee to keep yourself well-hydrated and warm.

In-Season

Picnicking

Brazeau River Provincial Recreation Area is a picturesque spot where families can enjoy a picnic lunch. You can munch on a meal directly from your campground, snag a table in a picnic area, or sit directly by the banks of the river to savor your feast.

You will want to be sure you have ample drinking water with you as well as a packed lunch. Your dog is welcome to join you on your picnic adventure, but please keep them leashed and be certain to clean up after them and properly dispose of their waste.

Canoeing

Brazeau River is a great place for water activities. You can paddle out to the middle of the river in your canoe or kayak and enjoy a day out on the water. Since the river is chock full of fish, you can even try your hand at catching your next great meal while you are out there.

There is no on-site pier or boat launch, so you will need to take your watercraft out directly from the shores of the beach.

Bring along sunscreen, drinking water, and snacks to enjoy.

Swimming

Brazeau River is a great place to take a dip on a hot day. The river remains refreshing and crisp throughout the summer months, making it an inviting place to burn off a few calories and enjoy some water sports. Swimming is unsupervised here, but the river waters are typically quite calm.
