Introduction

Camp Creek State Park is located in the southern part of West Virginia, just off of Interstate 77 in Mercer County. There are plenty of different activities that you can enjoy while visiting the park, from fishing and hunting to horseback riding and hiking. The park is located near Pipestem Resort State Park and has seven miles of streams that you can fish in.

Camp Creek State Park has plenty of hiking for you to enjoy, with fifteen different trails. These offer over 30 miles of hiking opportunities. You can even ride on your trusty steed to enjoy some of the trails in the adjacent state forest. The trails range in difficulty from easy to difficult, so you're sure to find something for everyone in the family to be challenged with as you explore the sights, including waterfalls.

You'll find a variety of camping locales available to you at Camp Creek State Park. Four campgrounds are located here, and one offers several sites for rigs with full hook-ups. You can even bring your horse or horses and camp with them at The Double C Horse and Rider Campground between April and October. For an added challenge, you must hike or bike two miles to get to the Pack It In - Pack It Out Campground.

Camp Creek State Park is located in Mercer County, West Virginia. It is easy to get to at just two miles off of Interstate 77. It is located a short distance from Pipestem Resort State Park as well as an hour from Babcock State Park. With four different campgrounds and a multitude of trails, you'll want to have a map to help you navigate the park.

Bicycles are allowed in the park, but children under 15 years old must wear a helmet while riding the bike according to state law. To ride on a bicycle after dark, the bike must be equipped with lights on the front and back and be operating.

Reservations camping

Mashfork Campground

Mash Fork Campground is open all year round and accepts reservations between Memorial Day and Labor Day. It has 26 sites for RVs, campers, and tents to camp at. Of these, three have full hookups, while seven sites have electrical and water hookups. The remaining 16 sites have electrical hookups.

This campground has Wi-Fi available. It also has a heated bathhouse. There are grills and picnic tables at the campsites. At each site, a maximum of two motor vehicles can be parked, and only one camping unit is allowed except for immediate families with permission from the camp superintendent. You can stay for up to fourteen days without prior permission to stay longer. Generators are allowed at the site but cannot be used during quiet hours.

Blue Jay Campground

This campground at Camp Creek State Park is open between April and November. It accepts reservations between Memorial Day and Labor Day. The campground has 12 rustic sites designed for tent camping rather than RV camping. There are no hookups, as this site does not offer RV camping. You can stay at this campground for up to 14 days, unless you have prior approval from the area superintendent. In addition, only two vehicles are allowed to park at each site.

The Double C Horse and Rider Campground

The Double C Horse and Rider Campground at Camp Creek State Park is only open between April and October of each year. This campground only accepts reservations during that time rather than first-come, first-serve availability. Campers are able to camp at this site with their horses. Depending on the site, there is availability for multiple horses, with two-, four-, and six-horse sites. Based upon which site you reserve, that is the maximum number of horses you can bring to the campground. A maximum of six horses is, therefore, able to stay at the larger site, and up to ten people are allowed to stay at each campsite. The sites are all rustic.

The Pack It In - Pack It Out Campground

At Camp Creek State Park, the Pack It In - Pack It Out Campground adds a layer of challenge for camping enthusiasts. Unlike the other campgrounds, you cannot access this campground by driving to it. You can only reach it by hiking or biking over two miles into the park to get to the campsite, bringing with you anything you need. As such, it is separated from all of the mainstream facilities at this park. Like the other campgrounds in the park, this campground has grills and picnic tables that campers can make use of. It is designed for tent camping rather than RV camping. It is near the Almost Heaven Road and Trail, and reservations should be made before you get to the campground.

Mashfork Campground

At Camp Creek State Park, the Mash Fork Campground accepts first-come, first-serve walk-up availability outside of the prime camping season between Memorial Day and Labor Day. As with the prime camping season, there are 26 sites available at this campground, which includes hook-ups for electrical at most sites. Water and electrical hook-ups are available at seven sites, and full hook-ups are available at three sites. Wi-Fi is available at this campground, as well as a heated bathhouse. The maximum stay is fourteen days.

Blue Jay Campground

The Blue Jay Campground is open from April to November of each year. It accepts first-come, first-served for reservations outside of the park's prime camping season between Memorial Day and Labor Day. Even with this availability, there are only 12 rustic campsites for tent camping, and the maximum stay is 14 days. When camping at this site, only a total of two cars or other vehicles are allowed to park at each site.

The Pack It In - Pack It Out Campground

Like the other campgrounds at Camp Creek State Park, the Pack It In - Pack It Out Campground accepts reservations between Memorial Day and Labor Day. After Labor Day, it converts to first-come, first-served availability. Everything else is the same about the site. Campers will need to hike or bike over two miles to get to their camp site, and there are not amenities such as Wi-Fi or a heated bathhouse.

Seasonal activities in Camp Creek State Park

In-Season

Fishing

You'll have plenty of opportunities to fish at Camp Creek State Park. The park boasts over seven miles of streams that are supplied with trout seasonally. You'll find fishing available both in the state park and in the adjacent state forest. A valid West Virginia fishing license is required to fish in the state park, and you are able to get this prior to your trip online. Make it an outing for everyone in the family to enjoy.

Hunting

Hunting is available seasonally in Camp Creek State Park and Forest. It is only allowed in the adjacent state forest rather than in the state park itself. Different animals may be hunted, with generally good hunting found in the area for such animals as deer, small game, and wild turkey. A valid West Virginia hunting license is required to hunt in the state forest, and you can apply for and purchase them online before your trip.

Horseback Riding

You can bring your horse camping with you at Camp Creek State Park and enjoy 30 to 35 miles of trails for you to explore. Horses are allowed overnight in camping stalls at The Double C Horse and Rider Campground, which is open from April to October. Much of the trails are in the adjacent state forest, although some bypass areas of the state park such as the picnic tables, where horses are not allowed to go.

Hiking

You'll find plenty of opportunities for hiking in Camp Creek State Park. There are over 30 miles of trails to explore that range in difficulty. The Mash Fork Falls Trail is a steep but scenic trail with a difficult level of difficulty. For an interesting hike crossing creeks, you can experience the Turkey Loop Road and Trail. For an easier hike, explore the White Oak Road and Trail, considered an easy hike, which also allows you to appreciate native rhododendron.

Biking

You can enjoy biking at Camp Creek State Park year round. Of the 33 miles of trails available in the park, 27 miles of trails are available to bikers. This provides you a unique way to experience the flora and fauna. In addition, you can bike to your campsite at the Pack It In - Pack It Out Campground, which is located two miles in from the parking lot, near the Almost Heaven Road and Trail.

Geocaching

If you are looking for a treasure hunt type of activity, geocaching might be for you. This is a technologically based hunt for hidden caches. There are currently three geocache sites hidden around Camp Creek State Park. These sites can only be found by tracking with a GPS or smartphone to find the location and uncover the hidden surprise. Search for them while on a hike or come here specifically to see what you find. This is a great activity for the whole family to enjoy during your RV trip to WV!
