The College National Finals Rodeo at the Casper Event Center on 1 Events Drive is held over one full week in June. Not only does it attract rodeo lovers and families alike, but some of the best rodeo professionals in the country.

The College National Finals Rodeo has been in Casper, Wyoming, since 2001. Over the seven days, men and women rodeo athletes battle it out to become national champions of their chosen event. From bareback riding, bull riding, and saddle bronc riding, through to steer wrestling, tie-down roping, barrel racing, and goat tying; this rodeo event has it all.

Even those who are not all that familiar with rodeo events will enjoy the offerings at the College National Finals Rodeo. There are exclusive shows and trade events, with plenty of activities and vendor offerings to keep everyone happy.

Transportation

Driving

Casper is in the mountainous state of Wyoming, the tenth-largest by area. It’s bordered by Montana, South Dakota, and Nebraska, Colorado, Utah, and Idaho. This centrally located state is one that’s well worth a visit in summer.

The roads are beautiful, albeit a little challenging on some mountainous turns, and the weather is stunning in June. On your travels, you can remain up to date with the weather conditions and traffic with apps such as Wyoming 511.

Upon arriving in Casper, I-25, Highway 220, and Highway 20-26 will all lead you to the Casper Event Center, a venue that will be hard to miss. It sits proudly on a hill at the north end of town and has a sizeable maroon roof that locals have nicknamed the “giant Pizza Hut.”

Parking areas

Parking is plentiful at the Casper Event Center. There are both paved and graveled lots with room for thousands of vehicles. All parking lots are also adjacent to the Casper Events Center.

However, spaces are marked for small vehicles and may not be suitable for large RVs. Consider leaving your RV at your campsite and using your pilot vehicle. Otherwise, you can rely on many of the public transportation options around Casper, Wyoming.

Public Transportation

There are taxis, buses, and private ride service operators ready and waiting to answer your call. Once you offload your RV at your chosen campground, you can arrange for someone to pick you up. If a private ride service provider, friend, or taxi operator is delivering you to the venue, the drop-off and pick-up point is outside the box office or on the northwest side of the building.

Where to stay

Onsite

Onsite camping is not available for RV-goers to the area. While there are, of course, plenty of parking lots – none of these are suitable for those looking for somewhere to camp overnight. Fortunately, Casper welcomes visitors with open arms and boasts plenty of accommodation options for long and short-term stays.

Nearby

While you won’t be able to camp at the College National Finals Rodeo, that doesn’t mean you can’t be conveniently close. There are a few RV campgrounds with and without service hookups within a ten-mile radius of the rodeo. You can set up camp, grab a few items, then arrange for a ride to the rodeo daily. You will never be too far from all the action.

Getting around

Upon arriving at the College National Finals Rodeo, you can go through the screening process, then wander around the expansive site on foot. There is plenty to see and do, and all of it is within a short walking distance. Once the rodeo action commences, you will be able to rest your weary legs in your reserved seat.

What to pack

Clothing

June is not the hottest month of the year in Casper, Wyoming, but it’s reasonably close. You will want to pack shorts, t-shirts, a cowboy hat to shade your head from the sun, and your trusty cowboy boots. Some of the rodeo events are held at night, so pop a jacket, pants, and long-sleeved shirt in your suitcase as well. Warm pajamas might be necessary overnight.

Gear

The College National Finals Rodeo is one of those “less is best” kinds of events. The fewer items you bring into the event center, the less you have to carry around – and the quicker you get through security. Rodeo officials may also set bag sizing restrictions, so make sure you’re aware of these before you enter the site.

If you haven’t brought any cash with you, there is an ATM on the concourse level between the K and L section. You can then purchase both food and merchandise during your visit.

Health & Safety

When you attend events in summer, it’s helpful to prepare for any weather eventuality. Don’t forget your sun safety products such as sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses, and bring any medical supplies and prescriptions you might require, too. If you are in Casper for the entire week, pack supplies that you may struggle to replace at a moment’s notice.

Cooking

Even though fire restrictions may stop you from experiencing a truly authentic campfire, you’re not short of options for cooking. You can use your onboard RV kitchen appliances, and some hosts may also offer communal cooking tools or above-ground fires. If you haven’t yet completed your grocery shopping for the week, there’s a grocery store within four miles of the rodeo, and many convenience stores dotted in between prominent locations in Casper.

Restaurants

You aren’t going to feel like cooking for yourself every night, and thanks to Casper’s hospitality, you don’t have to prepare every meal yourself. This thriving city has a lot to offer the average visitor. From pizza and lunch food to burgers, coffee, Thai, Italian, and Japanese; what’s not to like? Even the fussiest of diners will find something they love in Casper within a short driving distance of the rodeo.

Vendors

Even though you can’t bring your own food and beverages into the Casper Event Center, you won’t mind at all. The pizzas, wings, soda, cheese sticks, candy, specialty coffee, smoothies, and more, will beat soggy homemade sandwiches any day. There are both permanent and temporary concession stands on site, including portable bar and beer stations for those over the legal drinking age. Bring both cash and credit to take advantage of all there is on offer.

Safety

Security

Both Casper Event Center workers and rodeo officials take event security seriously. Your bags and you may be searched upon arrival before you take your seat. You can speed up the process by leaving weapons, professional cameras, selfie sticks, noisemakers, umbrellas, food, beverages, and any hazardous or dangerous items back in your RV. If in doubt, leave it out. Organizers may also enforce a no re-entry policy.

Weather

June is one of the most pleasant months to visit Casper, Wyoming. Average temperatures are around 78 degrees, while lows can be in the mid-40s. The best way to know what to pack and how to travel is by downloading a weather app. You can then be fully informed before you hit the road. Remember to top up all your RV fluids and carry extra water on board.

Medical

If you become unwell on your visit to the College National Finals Rodeo, then you’re more than welcome to ask for assistance. There is a first aid station on the concourse level directly behind the box office. Approach an event official to get you there or dial 9-11 in an emergency. There is a medical center in Wyoming under four miles from the event site.
