Introduction

Delamar Mountains Wilderness is located in the beautiful state of Nevada. It is managed by the Bureau of Land Management and has been designated since 2004. It takes up nearly 112,000 acres of land located in eastern Nevada in Lincoln County. Something unique about Delamar Mountains Wilderness is that it is rarely visited.
The few people who do visit it get to experience its beauty in seclusion. There you will find deep canyons, unique cacti, mountains, and even a lake. Visitors enjoy outdoor activities such as hiking, mountain biking, and rock climbing. If you're looking for a more laid-back activity, there is plenty of wildlife to see at Delamar Mountains Wilderness.
There are also several nearby campgrounds where you can rest before enjoying a full day of outdoor fun. You have the option to camp in an RV or in a tent. Either way, visiting the Delamar Mountains Wilderness is an amazing way to get a break from your daily life, make some memories with loved ones, and spend time in nature.

Transportation

Driving

The majority of people who visit Delamar Mountains Wilderness do so by taking one of two routes. The main is Delamar Powerline Road. This will bring you to the southern end of the wilderness and road signs will lead you to the entrance. You can also take Kane Springs Road which least northeast to Elgin, Nevada. The roads surrounding Delamar Mountains Wilderness are dirt, though they are bladed and well-maintained to make traveling as easy as possible.

Depending on where you are in the wilderness, you are between 15 and 30 miles from Alamo, Nevada. The area is also just over two hours northeast of Las Vegas. You don't have to worry about road closures due to harsh weather since the majority of the land surrounding the Delamar Mountains Wilderness is desert.

There are also no sharp turns or hard to navigate areas for larger vehicles such as trucks or RVs. Once you've arrived at Delamar Mountains Wilderness, most transportation is done on foot or bicycle. You might see the occasional horseback rider or off-highway vehicle as well.

Campsites in Delamar Mountains Wilderness

First-come first-served

Upper Lake Campground

At Upper Lake Campground, also known as Pahranagat Campground, you'll find 15 primitive lakeside campsites. Camping here is free, but there is a donation box if you're feeling generous. These campsites are available on a first-come, first-served basis and there are no reservations available. These sites can accommodate RVs, trailers, and multiple tents for group camping.

There are vault toilets, fire pits, and grills provided for your convenience. The campground asks that guests do not create fire rings with rocks. However, there are no modern amenities such as electrical hookups or running water available. Campers can stay at Upper Lake Campground for a maximum of 2 weeks per month.

When camping there you can enjoy several fun activities. There is fishing, boating, water sports, hiking, hunting, and more available in the area. This is also a great place to camp and enjoy an evening of stargazing with the family.

Virgin River Canyon Campground

You can hop on over to Arizona to enjoy some nearby camping at a Bureau of Land Management campground by the name of Virgin River Canyon. There are over 75 overnight campsites available there for both tent and RV campers. Provided for your convenience are picnic tables, grills, and shaded shelter areas. There are also flush toilets and drinking water available.

Each of these campsites is available on a first-come, first-served basis. 38 sites are dedicated for day-use visitors. When you're camping there, you'll be surrounded by beautiful mountains and desert valleys.

Like the previous campground, this area is perfect for stargazing in the evening thanks to the lack of pollution. There is a limit of two vehicles per campsite. Many people who stay here enjoy hiking during the day and looking at the jaw-dropping topography.

Seasonal activities in Delamar Mountains Wilderness

In-Season

Hiking

There are a plethora of hiking trails around the area. Whether you have a ton of hiking experience or you're just wanting to get some steps in, there is a trail you can enjoy. The topography is fairly diverse throughout Delamar Mountains Wilderness. If you are interested in going for a hike, make sure to bring plenty of water as there isn't any available in the area. Also, be sure to wear proper hiking gear such as boots for your own safety.

Climbing

One thing that Delamar Mountains Wilderness is known for is the beautiful and twisted canyons surrounding the wilderness. Many adventure-seekers will enjoy a bit of rock climbing when they're visiting. Due to the depths of the canyons and the height of the cliffs in the area, climbing is suggested only for people with experience. Be sure to pack your own hiking gear when loading up the RV as there are no rental stations near the wilderness.

Mountain Biking

Another adrenaline-filled activity that you might enjoy while visiting the Delamar Mountains Wilderness is mountain biking. Bicyclists can also use the same trails that are used by hikers. There is plenty of hilly and rocky terrain to give you the thrill you're looking for.
Because Delamar Mountains Wilderness isn't near any civilization, please be safe and wear the proper gear when mountain biking there. It may also be important to be aware that the landscape can change rather quickly.

Off-Season

Picnicking

If you're looking to enjoy a meal and nature, picnicking is a great activity but just about anyone can enjoy. There are no picnic tables available at Delamar Mountains Wilderness, but there are plenty of areas for you to eat. You can enjoy a meal in your RV, of course, but you could also lay down a blanket and immerse yourself in nature while sampling some delicious grub. If you do decide to do this, please take all of your garbage and belongings with you when you're finished.

Photography

If you are the creative type, you may want to pack your camera when heading out the door to visit Delamar Mountains Wilderness. Everywhere you look lies an amazing opportunity to photograph the wilderness and bring home memories of your trip with you.

You can take pictures of the mountains or cliffs, your loved ones, or even some of the cute critters that roam around the area. You don't need a fancy camera either, you can use the one on your smartphone just as well!

Wildlife Viewing

Taking time out of your day to relax and observe the natural wildlife surrounding you is a great way to spend your time at Delamar Mountains Wilderness. There are a variety of different animals that you will be able to see depending on what time of year you visit.

Most commonly found are mule deer, desert bighorn sheep, bobcats, mountain lions, Gila monsters, and even Mormon Mesa desert tortoises. Don't forget to bring your binoculars to be able to see all of the birds as well!
