Introduction

Fort Providence Territorial Park is a pretty park situated just outside of the town of the same name in the Northwest Territories of Canada. Located beneath a canopy of birch trees along the north bank of the meandering and fish-abundant Mackenzie River, it’s a popular destination for outdoor recreation, such as picnicking, fishing, wildlife watching and bird watching.

The campground is small with just 32 electric campsites that are suitable for tents and RVs or trailers larger than 30 feet. Some campsites can even accommodate two RVs or trailers which are great for families or groups traveling together. Spend your days picnicking along the river bank and watching the incredible sunsets. Kids will love the children’s playground.

Visit during summer and you’ll enjoy temperatures as good as 24⁰ C (75⁰ F) – perfect for hanging out at the riverside beach or cooling off in the waters of the river.

Fort Providence Territorial Park is located just over a mile (2 km) off Mackenzie Highway (Highway 3) before you reach the town of Fort Providence in Canada’s Northwest Territories.

Once inside the park, there are no driving restrictions, but be cautious and watch out for low-hanging branches and the bison known to roam the park.

Parking is available for day visitors and if you’re staying overnight, you can also park your big rig in the campground.

Family Campground

Fort Providence Territorial Park has a total of 32 electric (30-amp) pull-through campsites suitable for tents and RVs over 30 feet. Larger trailers and RVs may be accommodated but they could be a tight squeeze in some campsites so it’s recommended that you call ahead and check. There is also a spot for powered group camping with a picnic area and picnic shelter. Each campsite has a picnic table and a fire pit.

Campers have access to restrooms, drinking water, showers, a sani dump, and a kids' playground. Water is available for filling your RV seasonally from a locked gravity fed tank. It takes quite a while to fill a large tank and you need an attendant to be around to unlock it for you.

Picnicking

Fort Providence Territorial has a lovely day-use area with a picnic area open to both day visitors and overnight campground guests. While the facilities here are great, with restrooms nearby, your choice of picnic location is completely up to you though – pack a picnic to enjoy on the beach by the river, at the day visitor picnic area, or in the campground itself. There are picnic shelters with kitchen facilities available.

Bird Watching

Bird watching is a popular activity at Fort Providence Territorial Park all year round. Walk a;long the beach and river banks and through the trees of the campground and you’re likely to spot all sorts of shorebirds, songbirds, as well as many ducks and geese. Wildlife Watching

Did you know that Fort Providence Territorial Park and the surrounding area is home to more than 2,000 bison, also known as buffalo, that are on the threatened species watch list? Hanging out at the park during the off season is one of the best times to see them when there are fewer crowds. Bring your binoculars along and enjoy watching these enormous creatures from afar. Just be sure to keep a safe distance at all times!

Enjoy a variety of water-based recreation, such as swimming, paddling and rafting along the banks of the gorgeous Mackenzie River during the warmer summer months at Fort Providence Territorial Park in the Northwest Territories. With its own private campground beach along the riverfront, you can pack a picnic to enjoy on the sands before taking a refreshing dip in the cool waters. Bliss!

Watch the Sunset

Fort Providence Territorial Park has some pretty spectacular sunsets. Head here during the summer months to admire the night sky as it darkens over the Mackenzie River. Fishing

Set along the picturesque northern banks of the Mackenzie River near the town that has the same name, Fort Providence Territorial Park is a true fisherman’s paradise. Cast your line out for a variety of fish species, such as grayling, trout, pike, and coney – also known as inconnu. Please note that a Northwest Territories Sport Fishing Licence is not valid in any Northwest Territories national parks.
