Seasonal activities in Laurie Provincial Park

Off-Season

Fishing

Grand Lake is one of the best places to inland fish in Nova Scotia. Depending on the time of year, anglers can try and catch smallmouth bass, chain pickerel, and striped bass. From Laurie Park, anglers may fish from the shore or take a kayak or canoe on the water. If you prefer to fish from a motorized boat, there are both public and private boat launches available outside of the park. Anglers who want to take a chartered fishing or ice fishing trip should reach out to one of the local outfitters that provide the extra help you might need to reel in your next big catch. Before you head to the lake, be sure to get the appropriate Nova Scotia sport fishing license.

Winter Activities

Recreation seekers don’t have to worry about outdoor sporting opportunities during the winter in Nova Scotia because many of the summertime activities transition over to wintertime activities once the weather changes. As soon as the lake freezes and the snow covers the ground, many of the paths and trails surrounding Grand Lake turn into snowshoeing or cross country skiing trails, and the water becomes a popular place for ice skating and ice fishing. If you don’t have the appropriate winter gear, but you want to experience Grand Lake in the winter, stop by one of the local outfitters and get everything you need to stay warm and have fun in the snow.

Hiking

When you visit Laurie Provincial Park, one of the best ways to explore the park is on foot. The park’s hiking trail is a one-mile (1.9 km) path that loops around the campground and follows the shore of the lake. The trail is relatively flat and is rated as an easy walk for most guests. Don’t worry about leaving your dog at home for this trip, because leashed dogs are permitted on the path, so both you and your furry friend can enjoy the outdoors.

In-Season

Paddling

Canoers and kayakers love to camp at Laurie Provincial Park because it is easy to access to the water. If you have a canoe or kayak, bring your boat and launch from the sandy shoreline of Grand Lake near the day-use area. There is a parking lot near the launch site, and it’s not far to carry your boat to the water. The park does not rent canoes and kayaks, but if you are interested in paddling, there are several boat rental facilities nearby in Halifax. If more adventurous paddling is for you, then sign up for a sea kayaking excursion. Visit one of the kayaking charters in Halifax for more information.

Day Use

The day-use area is the perfect location to spend time outside enjoying the scenic views of Grand Lake. The park has several access points that lead to the water, and each of these access points has a beach where visitors may sit in the sand or swim. Most of the beach areas are close to restrooms and picnic shelters, and the main day-use area has a changing facility and trash cans, so it’s possible to spend the whole day near the water. The park also has a hiking trail with a scenic viewing area, so bring your comfortable shoes and go for a hike during your visit.

Special Programs and Events

During the warmer months of the year, the city of Halifax and Laurie Provincial Park both host a series of events and activities meant to entertain people of all ages and interests. The events range from outdoor engagements like concerts and festivals to fundraising activities and interpretive, hands-on educational activities. Depending on who hosts the events will determine whether the activity will take place at Laurie Park or outside of the park’s boundaries. Ask a member of the park staff for more information or visit the park or city website for the latest details on the events taking place during your stay.
