Introduction

Featuring sheltered campsites and a freshwater beach suited for exciting recreational activities, Lockston Path Provincial Park is a great place to enjoy RV holidays. Located 6 km (4 miles) from Port Rexton along Highway 236, Newfoundland, this 8 sq. km. (3 sq. mile) provincial park, which was first opened to the public in 1966, is a good base camp for exploring historic communities that are nearby.

At the park, there are 57 RV campsites that are available by reservations. Some of the campsites are nestled along a winding river and feature electric and water hookups for RVs. At each campsite in the park, there is a picnic table, firepit, garbage can, and parking space. Drinking water taps and toilets are available throughout the park, and some of the areas are accessible by wheelchairs. A trailer dump station, shower facilities, as well as laundry are some other amenities that are available in the park.

Rest assured you’ll have your hands full as you enjoy the scenic views of the flora and fauna in the park and hike along the Freshwater Pond. Another trail leads to a lookout point in the park. You can engage in exciting water-related activities such as boating/canoeing, sailing and fishing on Freshwater Pond too. The day use area is ideal for swimming, sunbathing, and picnicking.

Transportation

Driving

Located about 6 km (4 miles) away from Port Rexton along Highway 236, Lockston Path Provincial Park is accessible by RVs, trailers, and other motorized vehicles. As you find your way to the park, be prepared to drive on a bumpy gravel road. There are two entrances to the park from the highway, one on the northside (the main entrance) and the other further down the highway to the south. Within the park itself, you’ll be able to navigate to places of interest on local unpaved roads. There are no driving restrictions within the park.

Parking

There is a large parking area for RVs, trailers, and cars around the day use area in Lockston Path Provincial Park available for campers and visitors. Should you wish to, you can also park your rigs at your respective campsite in the park. RV parking within the campsite is only available for rigs within the specified limit at the campground. Overnight parking is available.

Lockston Path Park Campground

Lockston Path Park Campground features 57 campsites that are available for RVs and tents and accessible by vehicles. Electric and water hookups are available at designated campsites in the campground. At the campground, the campsites can accommodate RVs and trailers of varying length, but the length limit at the campground is 35 ft.

You will be able to make use of a number of facilities and amenities at the park including water taps, toilets/comfort stations, and trailer dump stations. Some of the sites in the campground are accessible by wheelchair. Campers often enjoy easy access to the Freshwater Pond from certain parts of the campground.

In-Season

Flora

As Lockston Path Provincial Park is located within the Maritime Barrens Ecoregion, the park is dominated by fir stands which provide shelter in areas of the park. Heath vegetation and wildflowers are also common in the unshaded areas. These vegetation and trees in the park are the first set of features that will welcome you to the park because they grow in the majority of the park. Visitors regularly enjoy fresh air under the park’s trees and watch out for wildlife and birds while doing so.

Wildlife Viewing

Lockston Path Provincial Park, which is situated in the heart of the Bonavista Peninsula features many wildlife species that are common in the province. RV campers and visitors often sight these animals at the campground, along the roads and trails, and within the forested areas of the park. You’ll get the chance to see wildlife species such as moose and black bear in different parts of the park. You should also look out for mink and beaver as you enjoy your stay.

Hiking

There are good hiking opportunities available for RV campers at Lockston Path Provincial Park. A 1.7 km (1 mile) looped trail begins from the day use parking area in the park to the lookout point where hikers can get vantage point views of the entire park. As you hike on this trail, you’ll pass through stands of fir and birch, and see beautiful wildflowers such as twinflower, bunchberry, and Labrador tea. Another hiking trail is available along the freshwater pond and this trail is 3.4 km (2 miles) long.

Off-Season

Boating

Exciting opportunities to engage in motor boating are available on the water of Freshwater Pond in Lockston Path Provincial Park. Because there is a boat launch facility at the park and no rental facilities available, it is advisable to come along with your boat attached to your RV/trailer. Canoeing and sailing are other water-related activities that you can enjoy at Lockston Path Provincial Park. So, rest assured that you are going to have a wonderful time on the park’s waters.

Swimming

Do you love to swim and fancy the activity while on vacation? Then, be sure to visit Lockston Path Provincial Park because you won’t be disappointed. At the park, there is a large sandy beach at the day use area by the main entrance to the park. As you arrive at the beach, you’ll be able to take a dip in Freshwater Pond and take advantage of the toilets and change houses available there. Note that the swimming area in the park is unsupervised, so swim within your abilities.

Picnicking

There are plenty of opportunities for you and your family to enjoy picnics at Lockston Path Provincial Park, whether you’re only visiting or spending your holiday there. The picnic area in the park is particularly designated for all to enjoy meals, and you’ll have access to various facilities in the picnic area. For instance, picnic tables and garbage cans are available. You’ll also find containers for charcoal disposal, as well as water taps and wheelchair accessible toilets.
