Mississippi River-Pool 6 begins in Trempealeau, Wisconsin and flows upwards to Lock & Dam 5a in Winona, Minnesota. This manmade body of water rests in the Upper Mississippi River Valley, an area which is well-renowned for its serene air and picturesque natural beauty. The dam is nestled between the two towns of Trempealeau, Wisconsin, and Dresbach, Minnesota, allowing families to visit two states during their visit to this beautiful property. Mississippi River-Pool 6 was built in 1936 to provide necessary flood control measures for the region.
The most popular attractions in the area include water sports, hunting, and fishing. The dam waters travel through several wildlife sanctuaries as well as the Mississippi National River and Recreation Area. The river itself has been declared an American Heritage River, and many visitors flock to enjoy its bountiful amenities, including incredible scenery, unique towns, and densely wooded areas that are ideal for hiking. Bald eagles also like to frequent the region, in season.
Mississippi River-Pool 6 sees its most activity between May and August annually. It is during this time of year that unusual species of prairie birds frequent this recreational facility, and the area plants are in full bloom. During April and May, visitors may be treated to the unique sight of the annual migration of songbirds.

Transportation
Driving
The route to Mississippi River-Pool 6 travels along two-lane roads that are in good condition. A remote locale, some walking is required to reach this body of water, so be sure to wear shoes that are comfortable and appropriate for a hike.
The roads are kept clear from snow in the winter months to permit year-round travel. Construction is seen on occasion.
Wildlife does enter the road from time to time, so remain alert when driving.
Traffic typically flows well with delays rarely encountered.
Parking
There is parking available at several different spots at Mississippi River-Pool 6. However, there is no specifically designated lot.

There is no public transportation available to Mississippi River-Pool 6.

Reservations camping
Prairie Island Campground
Prairie Island Campground is open for reservations for RV and tent camping from April 15th through October 31st yearly. Sites with full power and water hookups are available. Dogs are permitted on the grounds but must remain leashed.
Quiet time is observed between the hours of 10 PM and 7 AM.
First-come first-served
Perrot State Park Campground
Perrot State Park Campground is home to 102 campsites available to RV and tent campers on a first-come, first-served basis. Thirty-eight of the sites offer power hookups. Dogs are permitted on the grounds but must be leashed at all times. Maximum RV length is 40 feet.
The site is shaded by tall trees, and undergrowth provides great privacy between sites. Many of the sites are grass, so beware of mud after rain. The on-site amenities at this popular camping facility include toilets, showers, and a waste disposal station.

In-Season
Boating
Mississippi River-Pool 6 sees a lot of visitors each year who stop by this recreational area for its abundance of boating activities. There are several areas comprised of gravel and concrete where you can launch your motorized boat into the water. If paddling your cares away in your canoe or kayak is your preferred mode to catch up on some R&R, you can propel out into the water directly from the banks of the river.
One popular place for canoeing is a 3.4-mile trail that travels through the incredibly scenic Trempealeau Bay. Fancy a canoe trip but don't own a boat of your own? Nearby Perrot State Park offers boats for rent by reservation.
Picnicking
When the summertime temperatures start to soar, the conditions are perfect for a picnic lunch at Mississippi River-Pool 6. You can enjoy your lunch right from the banks of the river with incredible scenery to feast your eyes upon.
Picnic areas with tables can be found at the nearby Latsch Island Park and Landing, which can be reached on foot. There are also several private properties located in the region which offer concession stands where you can purchase snacks and drinks.
Dogs may join you on your picnic adventure but must remain leashed at all times.
Water sports
The abundance of water sports recreational activities at Mississippi River-Pool 6 draws visitors from all across the state. Whether you enjoy jet skis, paddleboards, windsurfing, canoeing, kayaking, or just hitting the open water in your powerboat, you will find that this recreational hot spot is the perfect locale for a day of water sports fun.
Boat rentals are available at several small concession stands found on the grounds as well as at area state parks.
Nearby Prairie Island Campground is also home to a sand beach that is perfect for swimming. Swimming is unsupervised here, so proceed into the water with caution.
Off-Season
Fishing
Fishing aficionados will not be disappointed with a trip to Mississippi River-Pool 6. There is a private pier found directly beneath Dam 5A. A small fee permits RV campers to fish directly from this popular spot. Nearby Trempealeau National Wildlife Refuge is also an excellent location for doing some angling. Powerboats are permitted on the water here, or you can take your canoe out for a spin on your day of fishing fun.
A fishing license is required for all angling in Wisconsin waters.
Hunting
Hunting is a popular pastime at Mississippi River-Pool 6. The nearby Trempealeau National Wildlife Refuge permits the hunting of deer by archery during gun season.
Waterfowl hunting is also allowed with a special event held each October to accommodate hunters with disabilities.
Perrot State Park authorizes deer hunting by use of muzzleloaders; however, a permit is required, and all state regulations must be carefully observed.
Winter sports
When the winter winds start to blow, there are still lots of things to do for fun at Mississippi River-Pool 6. For families who enjoy cross country skiing, nearby Perrot State Park offers nine miles of ungroomed trails for them to enjoy.
Ice fishing is also a popular wintertime sport at this beautiful recreational area. Snowmobiling is permitted on the grounds as well. Still, those taking part in this activity are asked to keep a careful eye for those skiing or hiking on the same trails to prevent any accidents or injuries.
