Introduction

With the Rocky Mountain foothills to its west and the Peace plateau to its east, Moberly Lake Provincial Park, sitting on the shore of Moberly Lake, offers amazing camping experiences for RV vacationers. Located about 25 km (16 miles) northwest of Chetwynd, off Highway 29, British Columbia, this small provincial park offers campers opportunities to enjoy leisurely strolls along the shores of the lake, watch the sunset, view the resplendent aspen and spruce forests that decorate the park, observe beautiful wildlife and birds, listen to songbirds, catch various fish species in the lake, canoe, kayak, swim, picnic etc.

Moberly Lake Provincial Park features a campground with more than 100 RV campsites available on reservations and first-come first-served basis. Facilities and amenities at the park include playground, boat launch, Information Center, firepits, picnic tables, dump station, telephone, picnic shelter and picnic areas, water taps, toilets, Marina, and parking lots.

Moberly Lake, named after Harry Moberly, was known by different names including “the lake you can depend on”, “the lake with a hole through it,” and “the lake with no bottom.”

Moberly Lake Provincial Park was established in 1966.

Transportation

Driving

Located about 25 km (16 miles) northwest of Chetwynd, off Highway 29, British Columbia, Moberly Lake Provincial Park is accessible by RVs, trailers, and other motorized vehicles via a 3 km (2 mile) gravel road off the highway. The roads within the park are paved and grant access to the campground. Off-Road Vehicles (ORVs), such as ATVs, off-road motorcycles, snowmobiles and side-by-sides, are not allowed in Moberly Lake Provincial Park.

Parking

Moberly Lake Provincial Park features three parking areas for RVs, trailers, and cars. These parking lots are distributed around the campground and provide campers options for parking their vehicles and rigs. RV parking at designated campsites is also an option at the park. Overnight parking is also available.

Public Transportation

There are no direct public transportation services to Moberly Lake Provincial Park.

Moberly Lake Campground

Moberly Lake Campground in Moberly Lake Provincial Park features 109 pet-friendly campsites available for RVs and tents. There are no RV hookup options available in the campground. RV length limit in the campground is 32 ft (10 m), however vacationers with larger rigs can call ahead to find out if there is space available. Amenities available in the campground include pit/vault toilets, water taps, picnic tables, firepits, waterfront access, and access to trailheads. Quiet hours are from 11pm to 7am.

67 campsites in the campground are available for reservations, while 42 campsites are available on first-come first-served basis.

Off-Season

Boating/Canoeing

Boating, canoeing, and kayaking opportunities are available at Moberly Lake Provincial Park for lovers of boating and paddling adventures. The park also features a double boat launch that provides access to Moberly Lake.

Swimming

Moberly Lake Provincial Park features a gravel beach with a marked swimming area for RV campers to enjoy swimming in the park’s waters. No lifeguards are on duty at the beach; hence campers and visitors are advised to exercise caution while swimming in the lake.

Fishing

Fishing and angling enthusiasts enjoy their time at Moberly Lake Provincial Park because the park offers wonderful fishing opportunities. Some of the fish species in Moberly Lake include Northern pike, arctic grayling, bull trout, lake whitefish, mountain whitefish, white sucker, and longnose sucker.

In-Season

Hiking/Cycling

There are several hiking trails in Moberly Lake Provincial Park that meander through the park’s areas and offer RV campers wonderful opportunities to explore the park’s resplendent vegetation. RV campers get to enjoy strolls on trails that start from the beach, along the shores of Moberly Lake to the campground, taking in the scenic views of the lake and aspen forest and spruce forest in the process. Cycling is also allowed on Moberly Lake Provincial Park roadways; however, bicycle helmets are mandatory.

Flora

White spruce, aspen and balsam poplar are abundant in Moberly Lake Provincial Park and cover majority of the park’s area. Much of the low-lying areas in the park are covered by large cottonwoods. The park also features shrubs such as prickly rose, wild sasparilla, currant, black twinberry, twinflower, highbush cranberry, and dwarf red blackberry. All these beautiful florae decorate the park, making it an absolute wonder to behold.

Wildlife and Bird Viewing

Moberly Lake Provincial Park is home to various wildlife and birds. Large animals that are seen in the park include black bear and moose. Other wildlife in the park include muskrat, red squirrel, beaver, and snowshoe hare. The park also features over 25 bird species, some of which are bald eagle, common loon, spotted sandpiper, American kestrel, belted kingfisher, and herring gull. Many songbirds are also seen in Moberly Lake Provincial Park.
