Ohio River-Robert C. Byrd Pool, also referred to as Gallipolis Locks and Dam, finds its home in Hannan near Gallipolis Ferry, West Virginia. This body of water is one of many in a system of locks and dams on the Ohio River. This particular lock was built in 1937.
It soon became apparent that larger locks were required to accommodate tows and barges of more substantial dimensions. In 1987, construction began to remedy the problem with the building reaching completion in 1993. The dam was then renamed Robert C. Byrd in honor of the prominent West Virginia senator.
A fishing pier on the grounds which permitted public use was introduced in 2007. Future improvements to the site include a hydroelectric power station and a public recreational area.
Today, there is a public park on the West Virginia section of the Ohio River. Found within this popular recreational center are picnic sections, a playground, and ample parking. Another much-loved attraction in the area is a visitor's center, which offers a viewing platform from which families can view the locks in action.
Ohio River-Robert C. Byrd Lock and Dam is the 10th lock in the system and consists of four locks in total.

Driving
Ohio River-Robert C. Byrd Pool is located in a remote area of West Virginia near the town of Hannan. The route to the pool proceeds along roads of two-lane construction; many of which are comprised of dirt and gravel. Traffic moves well, and the roads are kept free from snow in the winter months.
Wildlife does occasionally attempt to cross the road, so remain alert while driving.
Road construction is seen very infrequently.
Parking
There are several spots where you can safely leave your vehicle at Ohio River-Robert C. Byrd Pool. There is a recreational area on-site with a lot specifically designated for parking as well.

Reservations camping
Chief Logan State Park Campground
Chief Logan State Park Campground is available for RV and tent camping in the spring and summer months. Reservations are required. This camping facility is home to 26 sites. 14 of the campsites offer full power, water, and sewer hookups. The remaining 12 offer power and water only.
Other on-site amenities include bathrooms and hot showers. The campground is wooded with many tall trees, so shade is abundant even on the hottest of days. Some of the sites are a little close to the road, but if you pick your spot carefully, it shouldn't be too much of an issue. There are some open grass areas ideal for ball games, and several playgrounds and pavilions for group activities.

In-Season
Picnicking
Ohio River-Robert C. Byrd Pool offers the picture-perfect place for families to enjoy a picnic lunch. There is a small recreational area that features picnic tables and a playground where you can take a seat and nibble on the feast you prepared at home.
If you prefer to be in the center of the action, ringside at the lock and dam provides the ideal spot where you can enjoy your meal and take in the sights of the boats traveling through the locks.
Bring along your dog for your day of picnic fun if you like, but please keep them leashed.
Boating
With several boat launches along this section of the river, Ohio River-Robert C. Byrd Pool is a great place to enjoy some time out on the water in your motorized boat. Fancy something a little more old school? You can take your canoe or kayak out on the river to enjoy a day at sea.
This portion of the river is well-stocked with fish, so be sure to bring along your tackle box and some bait in case the mood strikes to try your hand at some angling. Check with local officials to see if a fishing license is required for angling in West Virginia waters.
Water sports
Ohio River-Robert C. Byrd Pool is a popular place for those who enjoy engaging in water sports when the temperatures start to soar. Though boating, canoeing, and kayaking are often seen here, you can also bring along your water sports equipment, including paddleboards, jet skis, and more.
There are several boat launches found on the grounds, or you can head out in the water directly from the shore. Either way, you're bound to have a ball!

Those who love to fish will find Ohio River-Robert C. Byrd the perfect place for doing some angling. There is an on-site fishing pier which is open for public use where you can do some angling directly from the dock. There are also several area boat launches that are the ideal spot for taking your power boat or canoe out on the water.

Hiking
Even when the temperature starts to drop, there is still lots to explore at Ohio River-Robert C. Byrd Pool. There is a cement walking path that runs the length of this section of the river where you can leisurely stroll to your heart's content. Bring along your best canine pal to join you if you like but please keep them leashed at all times.
The region is also home to a lovely wooded recreational area with several paths that are the perfect place for doing shorter hikes. Wear comfortable hiking shoes to prevent any injury to your feet from the different types of terrain you will encounter along the way.

Ohio River-Robert C. Byrd Pool is quite scenic, making it an excellent place for working on capturing some new shots for your portfolio. The locks and dam on their own are breathtaking to behold and make for exquisite photo ops.
