At the confluence of the Elk and Kanawha rivers, Charleston serves as the capital of West Virginia. It’s home to the gold-domed State Capitol and the West Virginia State Museum, where you can learn about the people and events that have shaped the region’s history. Get hands-on with the interactive exhibits at the Clay Center for the Arts and Sciences, which also boasts a concert hall and a planetarium where stargazing nights are held. If you want to pick up fresh produce or ready-to-eat treats, head to the Capitol Market that occupies a former freight station in the Downtown area. The Huntington/Fox Fire KOA is a pet-friendly RV park near Charleston and offers a range of full-hookup sites.The easternmost town in West Virginia is Harpers Ferry, which lies where the Shenandoah River meets the Potomac River. It was the site of abolitionist John Brown's raid on the United States arsenal in 1859, an event that played a role in hastening the onset of the Civil War. The lower part of the town is protected within Harpers Ferry National Historical Park, which is clustered with museums detailing the town’s fascinating past. Stop in at the Appalachian Trail Visitors Center before hiking a short section of the Appalachian Trail for sweeping views across Harpers Ferry below. There are some RV campgrounds in Harpers Ferry, including the Harpers Ferry/Civil War Battlefields KOA.Snow enthusiasts shouldn’t miss a visit to Snowshoe, a year-round mountain resort that’s comprised of three separate areas - Snowshoe Basin, Silver Creek, and the Western Territory. Outside of the winter months (when snowboarding and skiing are the main activities), the resort is a hub for mountain biking, horseback riding, and zip-lining. A short drive from Snowshoe is the Whittaker Campground, which features 62 trailer sites, restroom and shower facilities, plus a dump station.
