Po Boy Festival

Plan your next RV trip to the New Orleans area around the Po-Boy Festival, a culinary celebration of the delicious sandwich.

Event information

The Oak Street Po-Boy Festival is an annual food event that takes place in New Orleans every year. Its purpose is to showcase and celebrate the delicious po-boy sandwich. The venue for the festival is well-known Oak Street, which is the commercial hub of the Carrollton neighborhood.

Carrollton was considered a separate city until 1874 when it became part of New Orleans. The roots of the neighborhood go deep, so it is only fitting that the festival is held there every year. Several improvements have been made to the buildings and infrastructure over time, but the early 20th century facades and storefronts have been carefully preserved. Thanks to the care taken, the vibe remains authentic, warm, and friendly.

The Po-Boy Festival is held on a single day, and attendees can enjoy a range of different po-boys. Some of the local favorites are fried shrimp, roast beef, ham and cheese, and catfish. There are some innovative and unique sandwiches on offer as well. They can be ordered, "dressed" with condiments and add-ons, or "naked."

When it comes to po-boys, everyone has their favorites and preferences, and you're sure to find one you love at the festival. In addition to the great food, guests can enjoy some excellent live music, handicrafts, art, and other performance artists. Plan your next RV trip to the New Orleans area around the Po-Boy Festival, a culinary celebration of the delicious sandwich.

Transportation

Driving

You can get to the Carrollton neighborhood quickly from downtown New Orleans or the French Quarter. Look for the event signs or enter the Oak Street Po-Boy Festival into your GPS app. Driving to the festival in your rig is discouraged since it takes place in a residential neighborhood, and parking can be challenging to find.

Parking areas

Free parking is extremely limited and is available on a first-come, first-serve basis. There are a few paid parking options close to the venue such as Southport Hall in Monticello Ave. Spots are likely to fill up fast on the days of the Oak Street Po-Boy Festival, so it's a good idea to get there early if you plan to drive.

Public Transportation

Several bus routes will get you close to Oak Street. Another option is to take the historic St. Charles Avenue streetcar, which is a unique experience by itself. It will take you directly to Oak Street. You could also ride a bike to the festival and secure it at one of the lock-up racks.

Where to stay

Onsite

Po-Boy Festival does not offer onsite camping options. Fortunately, there are a number of RV parks and campgrounds nearby where you can book a spot.

Nearby

There are several great RV parks and campgrounds close to the festival site. Some of these are located right on the waterfront and come with facilities like full-hookups, big rig access, convenience stores on site, and pool access. You'll also be able to enjoy activities like fishing, swimming, boating, and jet-skiing.

Getting around

The Carrollton neighborhood is quite compact and ideally explored on foot. If you decide to drive or bike it there, find a parking spot and walk around to experience the area at it's best. The streets are quite narrow, so be prepared to enjoy the area without your vehicle as you get close to the festival sites. Special arrangements will be made to accommodate guests with disabilities.

What to pack

Clothing

It's best to keep your attire casual and comfortable so you can focus on eating all the good food on offer. You're likely to see plenty of bright colors and vivid patterns that reflect the vibe of New Orleans. It can get quite hot during the day, so wear breathable, light fabrics like cotton.

Gear

Carry sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat, a portable charger, and a lightweight blanket. Reusable cutlery and wet wipes can also come in handy. Take a refillable water bottle with you, and top it off when you need a drink. This way, you can cut down on your environmental impact while having a good time.

Health & Safety

Since the Po-Boy Festival takes place only on a single day, it can get pretty crowded. Keep close to your group and be vigilant, especially if you're with kids. Stay hydrated at all times and drink alcohol responsibly. Take frequent breaks to grab a beverage and get off your feet.

Where to eat

Cooking

Cooking or bringing in outside food will not be allowed. Most RV parks and campgrounds in the area permit cooking as long as it's on the stove in your RV. Some also have onsite convenience stores, so you can easily pick up the supplies you need. There may be some restrictions when it comes to open fires like campfires and barbecue pits.

Restaurants

New Orleans is world-famous for its delicious southern comfort food. People from all over the country and the world travel to the area to eat at one of the renowned dining establishments available in this historic community. Every corner has a coffee shop or local-favorite restaurant offering up their specialties.

Vendors

Po-boys to suit every taste will be sold by vendors at the festival. Whether you're in the mood for shrimp, brisket, alligator, soft shell crabs, fried chicken or mac & cheese, you'll find it here. In addition to old favorites that sell out, the organizers add new vendors every year.

Safety

Security

Due to the large crowds that flock to the Oak Street Po-Boy Festival, security measures have been stepped up in recent years. Security personnel and volunteers make the rounds; new features have been rolled out to improve traffic flow. Security cameras will be monitoring crowds throughout the site.

Weather

The weather is typically warm and sunny but often includes a chance of rain. If there are any safety concerns regarding rain or flooding, the festival will be postponed. In the rare event of sudden severe weather, evacuation measures are in place. Information regarding postponements and cancellations will be shared on the website and social media accounts.

Medical

There will be a medical tent where guests can get basic first aid and medical information. If you or someone you know needs assistance, flag down one of the volunteers or staff and they will guide you. Contact the organizers in advance for any queries or support related to the facilities available for patrons with disabilities.
