When Polipoli Spring State Recreation Area-Maui was founded, many of the trees indigenous to the region were removed to make way for the inclusion of amenities for visitors. In the 1930's, an effort was made to promote fresh tree growth through the planting and nurturing of the following tree varieties: pines, eucalyptus, tropical ash, China fir, cypress, and redwood.

The area is also popular for hunting boar. For this reason, visitors to the park are advised to dress in bright colors to avoid being mistaken for prey.

Driving

Travel to Polipoli Spring State Recreation Area-Maui from the nearby town of Kula covers 9.7 miles of ground. The majority of the route travels along country roads that are kept in excellent condition and consist of two lanes. Near to the entrance to this recreational area, the roads change from pavement to gravel then sand and dirt. Since a vehicle can easily become stuck, only cars with four wheel drive should proceed onto the property, and parking is not permitted in the campground. Traffic moves well, and road construction is extremely infrequent.

Parking

Parking is available on the side of the road just before the highway turns into a sand and dirt pathway. It is important to note that only vehicles with four wheel drive can proceed beyond this point.

There is no public transportation to Polipoli Spring State Recreation Area-Maui.

First-come first-served

Polipoli Campground

Polipoli Campground is found within Polipoli Spring State Recreation Area-Maui and offers tent camping and one cabin rental for year-round outdoor fun. Though the campsites are available on a first come, first served basis, reservations are required for the cabin. There is no RV camping at this site since it is located at an extremely high elevation as well as on a small island. Dogs are permitted to join their families but must remain leashed.

The on-site amenities include a toilet, drinking water, and picnic tables. There are no shower facilities on the premises.

Campers are advised to pack warm bedding and clothing as temperatures drop to the freezing point overnight.

A permit is required to camp at Polipoli Campground.

Summer

Swimming

Just a short walk from Polipoli Spring State Recreation Area-Maui are several springs which make excellent spots for doing some swimming. You will enjoy the picturesque scenery as you splash in the warm waters. After your dip, you can sun yourself along the sand while catching up with the latest bestseller or working on your tan.

Bring along lots of drinking water, some snacks, and some sunscreen. Your dog may join you on your swimming adventure but must remain on a leash at all times.
