Pomona Lake, sometimes referred to as Vassar Lake, is located in Vassar, Kansas. Nestled within Osage County, a municipality considered to be the Water Sports Capital of Kansas, this body of water and seaside haven attracts visitors from all across the country for its bountiful summer living and plentiful winter activities.
In 2014, Pomona Lake reached its 50th birthday. This man-made body of water was developed as a flood control measure with its dedication occurring on September 5th, 1964. The lake remains well stocked with many different species of fish including crappie, catfish, wiper, and white bass.
The lake itself consists of 4,000 acres with its shoreline. Pomona State Park is housed on the banks of the lake and offers 490 acres for families to explore. Found on the grounds are an additional eight public recreational areas and 12 camping facilities. Pomona Lake has quickly become a favorite family destination due to its friendly atmosphere and abundance of beautiful waterfront property. The most popular recreational activities include swimming, boating, and fishing.
Pomona Lake's 4,000 acres of crystal clear water is matched by 52 miles of coastline which is exceptionally picturesque and well-suited to many different activities including strolls along the shore, beachcombing, sunbathing, and more. But it's not just the lake that holds appeal at this great recreational center. Many families love to do their RV camping at Pomona Lake for its hunting, hiking, horseback riding trails, and disc golf courses.

Transportation

Driving

Travel to Pomona Lake from Topeka or other nearby towns proceeds along well-maintained roads which consist primarily of two lanes. Since this camping facility and recreational area is open year-round, the highways are kept free from snow to encourage people to visit. Road construction can be seen on occasion, but rarely interferes with traffic which continues to move fluidly.

Due to its more secluded location, the route to Pomona Lake does occasionally see wildlife enter the roadways. Remain alert to avoid an accident.

Parking

With several public recreational areas at Pomona Lake, there are many different lots where you can park your vehicle. The property also houses up to twelve different campgrounds; most of which can easily accommodate an RV.

Due to its remote nature, there is no public transportation available to Pomona Lake.

Reservations camping

Pomona State Park Campground

Pomona State Park Campground is a popular spot for families looking to do any RV or tent camping in the area. Each of the campsites is available by reservation only with camping permitted year-round at this facility.
Among the amenities found at this campground include four boat ramps, bathrooms, a comfort station, a beach, laundry facilities, picnic shelters, playgrounds, volleyball courts, a disc golf course, many trails, and horseshoe pits.

There are 42 sites with full hookups and another 93 with water and electric. There are also many primitive sites if you feel like roughing it for a while. with its lakefront location, this campground has something for everybody.
Generator use is permitted here, although it is typically unnecessary. A dog-friendly campground, you may bring your pooch along with you but please keep them leashed at all times.

Seasonal activities in Pomona Lake

In-Season

Swimming

With 4,000 acres of crystal clear lake waters to enjoy, it is not hard to see why families love to spend the day swimming at Pomona Lake. The waters here are typically warm and inviting, making them a refreshing place to take a dip on a summer's day when the temps are soaring. Lifeguard service is not typically provided, so be sure to only enter the water when conditions are right for swimming.

Pomona Lake offers 52 miles of pristinely clean and beautiful coastline that is ripe for exploring. Beachcombing is a favorite activity here as is sunbathing and even kicking back in the sand and enjoying a good book.

Boating

Pomona Lake offers four boat ramps, making it the perfect place for getting your watercraft out for the season. Canoes and kayaks can be deployed directly from the shore. With over 52 miles of coastline to choose from, you might even be lucky enough to find your own private slice of the water to enjoy.

Motorized watercraft are permitted in Pomona Lake, so you can feel free to launch your motorboats out on the water directly from one of four boat ramps found within the region.

Since fishing is also a popular sport here, you might want to grab your tackle box and some bait and head off in search of the perfect locale where the fish are biting.

Picnicking

Pomona Lake is an extremely picturesque spot, making it a family favorite destination for picnicking. The terrain found throughout this area is extremely diverse; a rare treasure for families to enjoy while navigating the property on foot. Along the route to your ideal picnic spot, you will discover vast meadows, rich forests, and incredible lake views. You will want to tote a camera along with your picnic basket, so you can capture some of the breathtaking sights you will discover along the way.

There are several picnic areas with tables for public use that can be found scattered throughout the Pomona Lake grounds. Equally lovely is the opportunity to lay out a picnic basket in your own private section of the woods or along the coast where you can enjoy the feast you prepared at home.

Off-Season

Hiking

Excellent hiking opportunities abound at Pomona Lake for those who love to explore the land on foot. An area comprised of dense woods, beautiful meadows, and a vast shoreline, you will enjoy the occasion to experience such diverse and beautiful terrain.

Be sure to wear hiking shoes that are sturdy enough to protect your feet and provide adequate traction for vigorous hikes. There are many hiking trails to choose from, affording you the luxury of selecting from trails that are easy to navigate to those that are extremely challenging with something sure to meet the needs of every member of your hiking party.

Photography

Pomona Lake is considered one of the most beautiful waterfront properties in the state of Kansas. Between the wildlife that makes this region its home and the abundance of glorious and unusual plant life indigenous to the area, you will be spoiled for choice when it comes to things to train your camera lens on.

Pomona Lake's beauty is enriched by the changing of the leaves into rich fall colors but is equally as stunning when a thick layer of snow blankets the ground and trees in the winter. The area is also a popular spot for family photos, so come prepared to capture a few new shots of the entire family to proudly to display on your mantel.

Fishing

Fishing aficionados love to come to Pomona Lake where the conditions are ripe for a great day of angling. Considered the Water Sports Capital of Kansas, Pomona Lake's waters are kept well stocked with many varieties of fish including wiper, crappie, catfish, and white bass. Fish directly from the shore or take a trip out into the depths of the lake in your canoe or motorboat.

Weather conditions can dip towards the chilly when out on the water, so come prepared with all of the supplies you will need to stay warm.
