Introduction
Around 50 miles from Susanville, California, Ramhorn Springs Campground is a popular Bureau of Land Management campground. It is located in Termo, California and is known to locals as a small water source. This area is commonly used by ranchers and their cattle. Many people will bring their horses to Ramhorn Spring Campground for a casual afternoon ride. This area of California is truly stunning.
There are different landscapes in the area that make one beautiful picture. You can see mountains, lakes, and dense forests all in one place. Within the landscape are different wild animals that call Ramhorn Springs Campground home. You may see creepy crawlers like snakes, frogs, toads, or spiders in the area. There are also large black bears, elk, and deer there as well.
If you plan on visiting Ramhorn Springs Campground, there are several peak season and off-season activities there for you to enjoy. Whether you want something intense like hiking or mountain biking or you’re looking for something calm such as picnicking or wildlife viewing, Ramhorn Springs has it! On top of that, there are ten campsites available where you can pitch a tent or set up the RV for a night or two.

Transportation
Driving
The first thing to note about traveling to Ramhorn Springs Campground is to avoid doing so if it’s been raining lately. The area can become flooded and you may be stuck inside the campground due to impassable roads. Located in Termo, California, Ramhorn Springs is relatively easy to get to. There are nearby mountains, but depending on where you’re coming from, that shouldn’t be an issue. Highway 395 is the closest main road near the campground. Many people take this if they’re coming from the Susanville area.
There is an access road just over two miles north of the California Department of Transportation rest area. This will lead you to BLM Road 26000. If you take this dirt road for around three miles, you’ll reach the entrance of the campground. It’s important to note that BLM Road 26000 isn’t updated or maintained regularly.
Because of this, it can be quite the bumpy ride for large vehicles such as trailers or RVs. All transportation in the area after you’ve parked is done on foot. Occasionally, there are campers who will take watercraft such as kayaks or canoes out to Kern River or in the spring.

Blue Lake Campground
Located in the El Dorado National Forest, the Blue Lake Campground is a stunning place to rest your head. As the name suggests, you will be close to a lake, which is perfect for California heat. During the peak season from the middle of April through July, Blue Lake Campground does require reservations. During the off-season, all campsites are available on a first-come, first-served basis. There are 16 campsites in total that are equipped for tents, trailers, and RVs.
There are no hookups available for RV campers there. Blue Lake Campground offers campers picnic tables and fire rings at each campsite. There are also vault toilets, grills, and piped water for your convenience. If you plan on eating during your stay, there are bear boxes provided for your safety. Simply keep any garbage or food within these boxes to prevent the attraction of bears and other wildlife in the area.
First-come first-served
Ramhorn Springs Campground
Staying at Ramhorn Springs Campground is the way to go when you’re visiting. It saves you a trip and you can easily pitch a tent or park the RV to enjoy an evening under the stars. There are a total of 10 campsites that are open to the public. Ramhorn Springs Campground is free and offers each campsite on a first-come, first-served basis.
The campsites have a picnic table and a fire pit that are there for your convenience. It’s important to note that there aren’t any modern hookups available for RV campers. There is a two-week maximum stay for each camper per month.
If you decide to visit Ramhorn Springs Campground during the summer, you can cool off in the nearby developed spring. It’s spacious enough that you won’t feel crowded if there are other campers swimming as well. There is also plenty of shade provided by the juniper trees in the area.
North Eagle Lake Campground
Another campground that’s managed by the Bureau of Land Management in this area of California is the North Eagle Lake Campground. The best thing about this campground is that there are 20 campsites available. This is perfect if the other two mentioned above are full. North Eagle Lake Campground has picnic tables and fire rings available at all 20 campsites. It is open seasonally from the beginning of May until early November.
Late spring and early summer are the busiest times for North Eagle Lake Campground. Even though it is open seasonally, the campsites are still available on a first-come, first-served basis. RV and trailers are more than welcome, but it’s important to note that there aren’t any hookups available and they must be 35 feet in length or less. The campground offers potable water and vault toilets for guests. There is also trash removable available for RV and tent campers.

In-Season
Fishing
Whether you’re traveling with an angler or you are one yourself, fishing is one of the most popular activities for those visiting Ramhorn Springs Campground. While you can cast a reel into the spring, it is suggested to go fishing in the nearby Kern River. There are several types of fish that may be caught.
The Kern River is best known for having a plethora of rainbow trout, razorback suckers, Shoshone pupfish, and Chinook salmon.
Hiking
Do you like to stay active while you’re on vacation? If you do, there are plenty of trails to hike on in Ramhorn Springs Campground. Hiking is a fun solo or group activity that can be done by visitors of any age.
If you do plan on hiking, there are a couple of things to keep in mind. You may want to travel with bear spray for your own safety. On top of that, it’s best to wear a high-quality pair of hiking boots.
Stargazing
There are few places better in the United States to see the stars at night. Ramhorn Springs Campground is home to clear skies in the evening, making for the perfect atmosphere for stargazing. The lack of light pollution in the area makes the stars shine brighter than you’ve ever seen them before. Pack a thermos full of rich hot cocoa and a soft blanket to make this a relaxing and cozy experience with your loved ones.

It’s common knowledge that California is a beautiful state. Ramhorn Springs Campground is no exception. If you have a cell phone, you’ve got access to a camera. Whether you use that one or bring your own DSLR, this area is perfect for photography. You can photograph the mountains, beautiful bodies of water or animals you find. Don’t forget to snap a few pictures of yourself and whomever you’re traveling with to bring a little bit of your trip home with you.
Wildlife Viewing
If you want a relaxing, yet still entertaining activity during your stay to Ramhorn Springs Campground, wildlife viewing is a solid choice. You may want to bring a pair of binoculars or a book about birds. Some of the wild animals in the area are deer, black bear, mountain lions, possums, and foxes. You may even get to see watersnakes if you decide to take a dip during your stay. Remember to leave animals alone and never approach them.
Picnicking
Picnicking is one of the best off-season activities for many reasons. For starters, you’ll have amazing views anywhere you look. The landscape in the area is breathtaking and to be able to look at it while enjoying an amazing meal is a must. There are bears in the area, which is why it’s important to clean up your scraps and garbage after you’re done eating. Some campgrounds will have bear boxes to keep you safe during your stay.
