Introduction

Revenue Flats, located in Norris, Montana, is run by the Bureau of Land Management. Many people love coming here to enjoy the plethora of outdoor activities that are available. If you plan to stay a few nights, you can camp throughout Revenue Flats, thanks to dispersed camping. There are also a handful of great campgrounds nearby that offer amenities such as RV hookups and potable water. This is a beautiful area to visit all year round. You can stay and explore for an hour, two weeks, or anywhere in between.

Transportation

Driving

One of the closest cities to Revenue Flats is Bozeman, Montana. If you're coming from that area, you can simply head west on Highway 191 towards Four Corners. Another popular route is Highway 84 heading towards Norris, Montana. Depending on the time of year that you visit, you may experience rough road conditions. There are some 90 degree turns to be aware of for larger vehicles and four-wheel-drive is highly suggested.

The roadways closest to Revenue Flats can be quite confusing and hard to navigate. They aren't paved and it can be easy to get lost in the area. Because these gravel roads are quite rough, it is best to drive a vehicle with high clearance. It's also important to note that the area is prone to snow drifts that can leave you and your RV stranded.

It is in your best interest to check the weather and your planned routes thoroughly before you leave. Be sure to pack extra food, water, and blankets in the event that you do get stuck. As long as the weather cooperates and you take your time, you shouldn't have any problem getting to Revenue Flats.

Campsites in Revenue Flats

First-come first-served

Tom Miner Campground

Tom Miner Campground is a favorite for those visiting Revenue Flats. This is a primitive campground that offers 18 campsites to visitors. Two of those campsites are for groups with more than 10 people. You'll have the opportunity to stay here for 16 days per month. Tom Miner Campground offers camping on a first-come, first-served basis 365 days a year. They do close if the weather gets bad or if there are road closures in the area.

They offer picnic tables, fire rings, and gravel pads at each campsite. Unlike many other campgrounds in the area, Tom Miner Campground has food storage boxes available, along with handicap bathrooms. There is potable water and vault toilets available as well. RV campers can enjoy camping here if their rig is 42 feet or less. There are even water hookups for RV. Many campers enjoy the local water activities and taking hikes throughout the dense forests.

Buffalo Horn Campground

Alternatively, you can sleep at Buffalo Horn Campground when visiting this area of Montana. Buffalo Horn Campground is open to both tent campers and RV campers. Speaking of, RVs should be around 30 feet or less in length. This place offers stunning views, thanks to being at nearly 7,000 feet of elevation. This also makes it the perfect place to enjoy an evening or two of stargazing with your loved ones.

Each of the campsites is available on a first-come, first-served basis. This is a dry campground and you are required to bring your own water. Located within Big Sky, Montana, this campground is easy to find and you won't have to worry about it being too crowded. The only sounds you'll hear are the crackling of campfires and the sounds of animals in their natural habitats. Many visitors of Buffalo Horn Campground enjoy taking a hike on the campground's trailhead.

Red Cliff Campground

Visitors of Revenue Flats can rest their heads at Red Cliff Campground. This is a beautiful campground in Montana that is quite close to both Wyoming and Idaho. Red Cliff Campground offers 11 campsites that are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Though there aren't any modern amenities, you will have access to potable water and vault toilets. If you're looking for a campsite during the warmer months, this is a great choice.

Each campsite is surrounded by tall trees that offer the perfect amount of shade. For RV campers, it's important that you make sure your rig is 12 feet in length or less to camp at Red Cliff Campground. This is a great place to stay while visiting Revenue Flats, as it is open year-round. The lapping water of the creek and views of the colorful canyon walls isn't a bad incentive either.

In-Season

Hunting

Hunting is easily one of the most popular activities for people visiting Revenue Flats. There are several different types of wild animals in the area. You will have the opportunity to see larger game such as elk and antelope. There are also ducks, turkey, rabbits, and grouse. It is important to note that hunting is not allowed in any National Park in Montana. It's also important that you have the proper hunting license before your hunting trip begins.

Water Activities

When visiting Revenue Flats during the warmer months of summer and autumn, there are a variety of different water activities that you can enjoy. The area itself is well known for white water rafting. You can also enjoy boating, canoeing, kayaking, paddle boarding, and swimming.

It's important that you bring your own watercraft with visiting Revenue Flats. Whether you're exploring alone or with the whole family, it is crucial that everyone wears a life preserver while on the water. The rapids can pick up quickly and it's best to stay as safe as possible while still having fun.

Hiking

A popular sport out of the water that you can enjoy is hiking. Revenue Flats is best known for having incredible spots for hikers to explore. Due to the changing terrain, it is important that you bring a high-quality pair of hiking boots. With that being said, there are different levels of hiking terrain in the area. With Revenue Flats offering plenty of rock climbing space, you can hike up large boulders and rock formations if you're looking for a challenge.

Off-Season

Picnicking

Whether you've just enjoyed a bit of a rock climbing or you haven't eaten lunch yet, picnicking is a popular off-season activity for those visiting Revenue Flats to enjoy. You can easily set up a small picnic table or lay down a blanket to enjoy a delicious meal while being immersed in nature.

Photography

If you've never visited Montana, it is quite a sight to see. During the off-season, visitors of Revenue Flats enjoy taking photographs of the landscape in the area. You will be surrounded by mountains and towering fir trees.

Wildlife Viewing

Speaking of elk, wildlife viewing is a great activity that the whole family can enjoy when visiting Revenue Flats. You can see large animals such as moose, deer, elk, and foxes. There are also smaller animals such as wild turkeys, rabbits, and plenty of reptiles. Be sure to bring a pair of binoculars to increase your chances of seeing one of the many different species of birds that fly around Revenue Flats, including bald eagles!
