What to pack

Clothing

Pack comfortable clothing that is appropriate for both Story Land and the mountain wilderness paradise in which it is located. In the summer, that means shorts, t-shirts, and walking shoes. As this is the mountains, also bring warm clothing for cooler nighttime temperatures, plus rain gear. Weather changes quickly in the mountains, so even if the forecast calls for sunshine, it’s best to be prepared.

Gear

Bring camping equipment with a somewhat remote mountain location in mind. That means flashlights, warm blankets, and anything you need to entertain yourself in an area without wifi, cable, or cell service. When visiting the park, have a bag with you containing your wallet, snacks, reusable water bottles, and cash.

Health & Safety

Bring sunscreen, bug spray, and a first-aid kit. Be sure to pack all essential toiletries, including deodorant, toothbrushes, and toothpaste for the campground, and carry prescriptions and other medical necessities with you at all times. Have a refillable water bottle with you. Stock up on items such as headache medicine when passing through a major town, as convenience stores may be few and far between.

Where to eat

Cooking

Campground cooking options vary based on whether you choose a developed campground or a more rustic dry campground experience. During especially dry summers, outdoor cooking including campfires and grills may be restricted, but generally speaking, this is permitted. Look for grocery stores and outdoor gear stores in Jackson and Conway.

Restaurants

There are only a handful of restaurants in Glen, but you will find other options in Conway, Jackson, Lincoln, and Madison. Look for locally-owned spots serving country-style cuisine. Expect New Hampshire made products like maple syrup, plus burgers, beer, pizza, and ice cream. Much of the food in the area is prepared with hikers in mind, so if you’re looking for packable lunches or hearty dinner fare, you’ll likely find it.
