Introduction
Surry Mountain Lake is located just southeast of the town of Surry, New Hampshire, along the Ashuelot River on Surry Mountain Lake. This Army Corps of Engineers Park has several group use and picnic areas for visitors to enjoy while RV camping in the area. There is no overnight camping at this US Army Corps of Engineers park but there is overnight camping at the local KOA, a 36 minute drive to the west.
The lake provides plenty of recreation all year around. There is a 600 foot sandy beach at this COE park with a swimming area and change house. Picnickers at the park will find picnic tables, shelters and grills at sites and can enjoy swimming at the beach, a playground for little ones, and can arrange group events at this beautiful park. With it’s sandy lakefront beach and river setting, shade trees, and open grassy areas, and views of Surry Mountain, this is an excellent destination for locals and visitors alike.
A boat ramp allows kayakers, canoers, and small motor boats access to access the lake for fun on the water. The COE park is open during the winter, and many outdoor activities occur in the area during the colder months when the lake freezes to allow ice fishing and snowfall makes cross country skiing, snowshoeing, and snowmobiling possible. Driving
Located in the Surry, New Hampshire area along Route 12 A, Corps of Engineering, Surry Mountain Lake is easy to access, with paved roads appropriate for all vehicles.
From Route 12 A turn east on Park Drive and head left where the road forks to reach the Surry Mountain Lake Beach with its large paved parking lot. You can access route 12 A from the south using Highway 9 or from the north off of Route 123. The nearby Surrey area has some amenities, and a larger town, Keene, has many services and amenities, just 5.9 miles south, a mere 12 minute drive.
From Keene take Court Street north until it becomes Route 12A and proceed 5 miles to the Park Drive entrance on the right.
If travelling on interstate 91, take Highway 9 east to Keene and go north on 12A to reach the park.
From interstate 89 travelers can take Highway 202 west from Hopkinton, and access Highway 9 west to Keene, where they can turn north on Court Street which becomes 12A to access Surry Mountain Lake Beach park.
All highways and access roads are paved and appropriate for large RV units and vehicles check road reports in the winter when highways and access roads can have icy conditions.

Brattleboro North KOA
The best RV camping is located at the nearest KOA campground in Vermont, a 36 minute drive away, just a 22.7 mile trip from Surry Mountain Lake Beach. The campground offers full hookups or just water and electric hookups for RV camping. Cottages and tent sites are also available. Things to do at this campground include swimming at the campground pool, games in the game room, a dog park, feeding the goats at the goat petting zoo, a playground, ice cream socials and fun crafts.
There are 50 Amp electrical hookups, WiFi, Cable TV, a pavilion, propane, and firewood on site. Other activities at the campground include a horseshoe pit and basketball court. Enjoy a walk on the Nourse Hollow Walking Trail and head on over to the gift shop and camp store on site or the Walker Farm Stand next door. The KOA is open from mid April until late October. In-Season
Swimming
The 600 feet of sandy beach on Surry Lake at Surry Mountain Lake Beach is great for sunbathing and swimming, and there is a swimming area designated here. Please note that there are no lifeguards on duty, so watch children carefully and stay in areas appropriate for your ability. Occasional water quality advisories may be in affect and are posted at the beach. There is a change room on site and flush toilets for visitors to use. The climate in New Hampshire is warm enough for swimming from late May until early September.
Boating
A boat ramp at Surry Mountain Lake Beach allows easy access to the lake for kayaks, canoes, and small motor boats. Please note that the lake has a no wake policy, so motor boats need to watch their speed. During severe storms this lake acts as a flood control facility, and the lake may be too high or dangerous for some boating activities. Ensure you have life vests on board for all passengers on your watercraft.
Picnicking
Surry Mountain Lake Beach is an excellent place to enjoy an outdoor meal with family and friends. Picnic tables and grills are available on site. There are picnic shelters, shade trees, and group use areas with shelters as well. The nearby playground and beach provide fun recreational activities while out on a picnic, and you can enjoy the view of Surry Mountain from your picnic spot!
Off-Season
Hunting
There are over 1600 acres of managed wilderness in the Surry Mountain Lake area. Pheasants are stocked by the state in the region for hunting in the fall. All hunters must obey New Hampshire State laws and obey posted regulations. Ensure you have the appropriate license and are aware of permitted areas and rules before your hunting excursion.
Cross Country Skiing
When the snow falls, hiking may not be feasible, but cross country skiing or snowshoeing on the area trails, or the frozen lake provides a great way to enjoy this natural area in winter. Be sure to dress in layers, it may be cold, but skiers and snowshoers work up a sweat, and warm up on outings, so you will want to be able to shed layers to stay dry and be able to bundle up again at rest stops. There is a cross Country Ski trail at the Dort Road area with a 2 mile groomed loop that follows the river, through pine forests, and along open fields.
Ice Fishing
The state stocks the river upstream with trout. The lake has rainbow trout, brown trout, smallmouth and largemouth bass, chain pickerel, and black crappie fish species. During the winter, when the lake freezes, ice fishing on the lake is a popular pastime. Be sure you have a valid state fishing license and obey regulations and limits. Have warm outerwear and gear for winter fishing.
