Introduction

Located near the White Mountain National Forest, Swans Falls Campground offers access to the lovely Saco River. The campground and day use area are managed by the Saco River Recreation Council and reservations for overnight stays must be made via phone to the SRRC. The campground is designated as an outdoor educational facility and maintains a visitors’ center that offers educational opportunities. There's also also find a camp store located here for those little things that were forgotten when packing.

The Saco River, located in the southwestern part of Maine is popular spot for canoeing, kayaking, and tubing in the summer months. Swans Falls Campground is located along a stretch of the Saco popular with those interested in use of the river. The campground maintains a small swimming beach and has two float put in spots. Those interested in land sports will also find hiking and rock-climbing opportunities in the area.

The campground maintains 18 camping sites. Amenities include several outhouses, fire rings, water spigots for drinking water, and picnic tables. Sites 11 and 20 are outfitted with a lean-to. Guests will find the campground near the Fryeburg Fair Grounds. The campground is densely wooded mature forest and some of the camp sites have limited space due to trees within the camp sites. However, the campground is lovely and sites are shaded. The campground is open from late May to early October. However, reservations can be made as early as January.

Guests will find the campground easily. It is located just north of the Fryeburg Fair Grounds. Head north east on Main St. You will pass Subway on your left and make a left turn onto Swans Falls Rd.

Swans Falls Campground is located approximately and hour-and-a-quarter from north west of Portland ME.

Parking

Parking is available near the campground store. There is also overflow parking available just east of campsites 4, 5, and 6. Be mindful that this is a popular spot for accessing the Saco River during the summer months.

Public Transportation

There is no access to public transportation available within the campground.

Swans Falls Campground

Located beside the Saco River, Swans Falls Campground is a popular place to access the river in summer months. Guests will find the river exceptional for canoeing, kayaking, and tubing in the heat of summer. The densely wooded campground is easily located beside the Fryeburg Fair Grounds. Guests will find a small sandy beach for swimming, two put in’s for tubes, canoes, and kayaks, drinking water, and several outhouses located here for both day-use and camping.

The campground is managed by the Saco River Recreation Council and there are opportunities to learn more about the river and local flora and fauna at the visitor’s center.

Guests wishing to extend their stay to include overnight camping will want to call the SRRC to reserve their camp site. They will find 18 sites to choose from. Although there are no hookups available within the campground guests will find drinking water and outhouses available for their use. The campground if outfitted with picnic tables and fire pits.

Off-Season

Hiking

Remember to pack your hiking boots as well as your swimsuit when heading out to Swans Falls Campground. Visitors to this lovely forested campground with an interest in hiking will find nearby Jockey Cap of interest. Jockey Cap Trail is a half-mile out and back trail with exceptional views. Located just off Rt 302 in Fryeburg, this trail starts at the Quinn’s Motel and Country Store parking lot. Guests will find this short, wooded hike offers both stunning views of the White Mountains and the town of Fryeburg and rock-climbing opportunities.

Fishing

Guests to lovely wooded Swans Falls Campground with an interest in fishing will want to try their hand at catching supper while out this way. The Saco River which runs along side of the campground offers exceptional fishing opportunities. The Saco River runs through several hydroelectric dams on its way to the sea. Fishermen will often be found fishing near the dams. Expect to pull trout, bass, shad, and stripers from the river. Whether you are casting from a boat or from under the shade of a pine by the shore, you will find the fishing here worth a visit.

Diana's Baths

Guests to Swans Falls Campground with an interest in nature will want to make the trip to North Conway New Hampshire to see stunning Diana’s Baths. Located along a one and a half-mile trail, Diana’s Baths offers guests the opportunity to play in a series of pools with cascades occurring along Lucy Brook. This easy hike, locate in the White Mountain National Forest, leads guests along a series of pools with good swimming opportunities. Guests will see a lovely waterfall where water tumbles 12-feet onto water smoothed granite. Guests should be mindful that the rocks are slippery. Guests will find this a stunning hike whether undertaken in the summer, amid the colors of fall, or in the icy snow covered winter.

Guests to Swans Falls Campground will want to remember to pack their sunscreen and swimsuit before heading out to this lovely wooded campground. Renowned for its canoeing and tubing, the Saco River is also an exceptional place to take a dip and cool off in the summer months. Be mindful that though the river tends to run slow in this area, it is deep and can run faster than you expect after heavy rains. So, please, be mindful of small children and poor swimmers when swimming here.

Tubing

The Saco River that runs along the edge of lovely wooded Swans Falls Campground is renowned for its tubing and canoeing. The area is most heavily populated in the late summer months. There are two places in the campground specifically for putting tubes and small water crafts into the river. Those looking for guided experiences will also find numerous options for tubing this spectacular clear water river. Tubing outfits offer anything from short half-hour floats to multi-day trips.

Paddling

Make sure you load up your canoe or kayak when heading out to Swans Falls Campground. The Saco River runs along the edge of the campground, and the campground is reported to be the most popular spot for putting in a canoe or kayak. The campground is most popular in late summer and indicates that they service up to 7,000 paddlers a year. The river supports several rental companies, so you can try paddling even if you don’t own a canoe or kayak. Those running their own canoes and kayaks can arrange for a ride back to their car or campsite through one of the rental companies servicing the area as well.
