Sprawling around the Chesapeake Bay, Maryland shares its borders with Virginia, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Delaware, and the District of Columbia along the Mid-Atlantic coast. It's centered around the historically significant seaport of Baltimore, home to the birthplace of the United States' national anthem - Fort McHenry.
Named after the English queen Henriette Maria, Maryland was inhabited by the Algonquin, Iroquois, and Sioux Native American peoples before Europeans arrived in the 16th century. It was established as a religious haven for Catholics who had been persecuted in England, and many of its citizens played key roles in the American Revolution.
Maryland has been dubbed "America in Miniature" due to its diverse topography and climate, with the state boasting more than 4,000 miles of shoreline. From the sand dunes of the east to the wildlife-filled marshlands around the Chesapeake Bay and the oak-blanketed hills of the Piedmont Region, there's plenty to inspire and no shortage of RV campgrounds in Maryland to make it all possible.
