Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park is located in Skagway, AK, which is situated on the far, southeast finger of the state. The historical park is found on the shores of the Chilkoot Inlet, which branches off the North Pacific Ocean. It is only about 15 miles from the international border with Canada. Other well-known towns in the region are Haines, which is around 20 miles to the south, by ferry, and the state's capital, Juneau, which is around 103 miles to the south, by ferry.

This part of the state consists mostly of forested mountains. The Dyea Campground is managed by the National Forest Service. Campers should note this option is very rustic, with no services or hookups offered other than vault toilets.
