Sitting atop of Mount Nebo at 1,350 feet is Mount Nebo State Park. Located in the Arkansas River Valley, the state park has been drawing visitors in for years, all eager to witness the stunning views and partake in the many recreational activities offered. With clear skies, you are able to see for many miles in any direction, and it is for this view that so many people book an RV rental in Yell County.
Mount Nebo State Park was founded when the Civilian Conservation Corps used native logs and stone to build a number of structures on the mountain, such as bridges, trails, and pavilions. In 1933 it became a state park. Despite being relatively remote, there are a few towns within driving distance of the park including Dardanelle, Delaware, and Chickalah.
There are a number of facilities throughout Mount Nebo State Park for visitors to enjoy such as a swimming pool, tennis courts, and several picnic areas. Be sure to pack your swimming attire so that you can enjoy the modern bathhouse on the mountain's eastern rim. After your swimming session, make use of the pavilions, basketball court, and amphitheater, most of which are located near the state park RV campgrounds.
Overall there are over 14 miles of hiking trails to explore, all of which connect to make routes of different lengths and difficulty levels. There are two main trails that go around the whole mountain, one of which is smoother and good for dog walking or trail running, and the other a bit more rugged but with incredible views. A lot of the other trails connect these two, which are known as the Bench Trail and the Rim Trail respectively, the second of which is one of the most scenic hikes in the area. Another notable trail is the Summit Park Trail, a historic trail with a few points of interest along the way.
For one of the best and most unique viewpoints of the Ozark mountains, hang gliding in Mount Nebo State Park is offered. Twice a week hang gliding events held in the park, one in spring and the other in summer. Many people get a rental motorhome at Mount Nebo State Park for this reason alone. There are two launching points on the mountain where daring individuals can launch themselves off and soar over the impressive valley below. One launch point is from the area behind the visitors center, and the other is at Sunrise Point at the east end of the mountain.
Overall there are 34 motorhome camping sites to choose from, all of which will plant you in the heart of nature, ideal for an escape away from the busy day to day life. Twenty-four of these campsites are semi-modern and available for RVs, while the others are rustic hike-in tent sites. There are 30 amp electric hookups available, as well as water.
You will find picnic tables around the campsite for alfresco dining in the mountain scenery, and fire pits and grills, making camping at Mount Nebo State Park a breeze. Nearby are clean shower and toilet facilities. The campsite is available all year round with a maximum RV length of 24 feet. All sites are able to be reserved and can be rented up to one year in advance.
The Arkansas River Visitors Center is a must for those that get an RV rental near Mount Nebo State Park. The theme of the center is 'The Renaissance of the River' and is full of interpretative exhibits which tell the story of the development of the river valley from the time if the Native Americans to present day. In addition, there are some hands-on exhibits which are great for the kids, a looking through simulator and some wildlife exhibits.
The city of Dardanelle is nestled in the shadow of Mount Nebo, on the banks of the Arkansas River. There are many historical landmarks within the city itself, such as in the Council Oak Park there is a huge 400-500-year-old oak tree which has great significance in the area. One of the town's most popular attractions is The Barn at Twin Oaks Ranch and the impressive Post Office Mural. Additionally, it is a great place to grab a bite to eat, do some shopping, or have a night out.
Despite the name, Little Rock is a much bigger town and is easily reachable for a day trip. The Museum of Discovery is a good place to start your adventure. Located downtown it is housed in a historic building and offers fun and exciting exhibits for folks of all ages to explore.
