If it’s a myriad of colorful leaves and a picturesque small-town vibe you’re looking for, this area of Canada is just the place. Located in the northeasternmost corner of Nova Scotia, equidistant between New Glasgow, Guysborough, and Sherbrooke, the small town of Antigonish is an active college town chock full of food, culture, and history. Antigonish is also the home of St. Francis Xavier University and boasts an active arts scene.

In the mid-1700s, the first wave of European settlers flooded the town as the Scots traveled across the ocean in search of a new start. Over the following 200 years, Antigonish would become a haven for refugees, explorers, and travelers in search of a new home. Between America’s freed slaves in the early 1780s, the Irish settlers in the late 1780s, and the introduction of Catholicism through the English, Antigonish proved to be a welcoming and eclectic community.

Whether it’s museums, parks, historic landmarks, or local shopping, there’s something for everyone to discover in Antigonish. This New England-style town is alive with small shops and community activities. Book an RV in Nova Scotia and get your vacation started.

Discover Antigonish

The Great Outdoors

Planning to do some outdoor adventuring with your RV rental in Antigonish? The Antigonish Landing Trail is a lovely spot to meander around and take in all the natural wildlife. This four-kilometer (two-mile) trail is low-impact and takes you around the estuary of Antigonish Harbour. The walk provides two raised landmark spots that are great for sightseeing. This trail is also a great place to go cycling, hiking, or snowshoeing.

Outdoor enthusiasts can also head over to the Arisaig Provincial Park and have a nice picnic with the family. Arisaig is delightfully small and rests upon the shores of the Northumberland Strait. See the beautiful rocky coastline and watch birds float, dip, and dive over the water. There’s even a rushing waterfall that’s sure to spark the adventurer in anyone renting an RV in Nova Scotia.

The Antigonish County coastline is a marvel in itself, which makes it one of the best places to rent an RV in eastern Canada. Visitors come from all over to discover the Antigonish North Shore Lookoffs. Arisaig Hill, Cape George, and Ballantyne’s Cove provide picture-perfect lookouts, making it a great place to snap some shots for the family photo album. The Cape George Lighthouse is a must-visit, while Arisaig Hill is like a scene from a movie. The gorgeous Ballantyne’s Cove has a marina where you can park your boats.

Camping in Antigonish

Anyone who rents an RV in Antigonish is going to need a place to post up for a night or five. Whidden Park Campground & Cottages is located just outside the university and minutes from the coast. More than 150 RV campsites offer a variety of accommodation options, from primitive sites for tents and campervans to full-service pull-through sites for large motorhomes. Campers will find plenty of fun activities on-site, including sports courts, a rec hall, swimming pool, and more. Amenities include restrooms, showers, laundry facilities, and Wi-Fi.

The Oasis Motel and Campground can be found on the eastern edge of town. There's no Wi-Fi, and the cell service isn’t great, but when it comes to camping, the seclusion is part of the charm! Oasis offers full hookups, public restrooms, and hot showers to its guests. The campground's location just off the Trans-Canada Highway also makes it very easy to find.

If a decent view is what you’re looking for, consider Linwood Harbour Campground. It’s located near the shore of Barrio’s Beach and is within 30 minutes of Pomquet Beach, a few museums, and plenty of shops. The park provides full hookups, restrooms, showers, and laundry facilities for its guests. Wi-Fi is also available on-site.

Exploring the City

While it's not a huge city, Antigonish features a decent selection of activities. As far as sightseeing goes, make sure to stop by the St. Ninian Cathedral. The architecture is stunning, with tall columns lining the way to the altar and supporting masterfully painted ceilings. Well-crafted stained glass murals are installed along the walls, and hand-carved sculptures are set up around the parish.

The charming campus of St. Francis Xavier University brings a large variety of people, art, and culture to the town. Drive through or walk the campus and get a taste of the scenic beauty and lively vibe of St. Francis Xavier University.

There are a few museums and art galleries to explore while RV camping in the Antigonish area. Within a short drive east, west, north, or south of the town, Antigonish boasts its eclectic culture in many ways. See local art hung up the Old Barn Gallery, or visit historical sites that share the history of the Antigonish’s Gaelic heritage. Local art and charm can be found all over the area.

When it’s time to pack up your trip and move on to the next adventure, make sure to fill up your tank and your belly. There are plenty of gas stations and restaurants in Antigonish, including local cuisine, Asian fare, and pizza. Top off your RV tank and hop onto the Trans-Canada Highway, which can take you back west towards New Brunswick.
