Take Spinney Mountain State Park or Eleven Mile State Park, for instance, both no more than a half an hour's drive from where you will be staying. These lakeside parks are popular in the summertime, especially. Spinney Mountain State Park is named for the small mountain that overlooks its lake. The reservoir on site is full of different types of pike and trout, making for some fantastic fishing. Eleven Mile State Park is home to an even larger lake, with amazing shores and swimming areas surrounding it. The lake is known for its massive salmon populations, yet another fishing area popular with anglers. Both parks are wonderful day trip destinations while you're camping at Buena Vista KOA.Gunnison National Forest is one of many federally managed forests surrounding Buena Vista KOA, giving you millions of acres of lush, alpine forest to hike, bike, or trek through. Over one and a half million acres and seven wilderness areas headline the forest’s impressive features, and there are countless places to camp out for the night when you are having too much fun.Just down the road from your RV rental at Buena Vista KOA is the legendary Great Sand Dunes National Park, named for its epic dunes that climb towards the sky with the startling contrast of the snow-capped Rocky Mountains adjacent to them. You can hike up the dunes and feel like you are in the Sahara Desert, or sandboard down the inclined slopes for a thrilling, magical experience. Camping is welcomed here too should you feel the need to make it an overnight trip.

Exploring the City

If you head into nearby Buena Vista for the day, there is plenty to do. Bars, distilleries, breweries, restaurants, art galleries, and lovely boutiques make you feel right at home in this idyllic, mountain community. The Buena Vista Heritage Museum is a wonderful place to learn about the area, with three different buildings under its care. The old courthouse is an amazing work of art, while the old train depot helps establish a picture of the early days in Buena Vista. There are model train sets, old photographs, antiques, and some natural history on display too.The Buena Vista Boulder Garden is a park with lots of unique rocks and boulders on which you can practice climbing. This public park is a great place to exercise, enjoy the fresh mountain air, and pick up a new hobby with your friends or family.Down in Salida, you can relax at the Salida Hot Springs Aquatic Center, a lavish recreation center opened by the city. The city has the largest indoor hot springs in North America, as well as rock climbing walls, splash pads, hot and cold pools, and much more.
