Once a rough-and-tumble town home to cowboys and miners, the “Mile-High City” of Denver now serves as the cultural capital of the Rocky Mountains. With its endless opportunities for adventure, numerous gastropubs, a vibrant craft beer scene, and a generally laid-back approach to life, it’s no surprise that Denver has become a top-rated RV camping destination.

Like many cities in the western United States, Denver is fairly spread out. Many of the area’s best outdoor attractions are several miles outside the city. Booking an RV rental in Denver is the perfect way to see the regional sights, without having to worry about transportation or accommodations.

Denver doesn’t have a highly-developed public transit system, though, the RTD light rail system can be a big help in navigating the city. Bus stops can usually be found in areas of the city not served by light rail. With public transportation, you’re never more than 45 minutes from the downtown core.

Outdoor Activities

Colorado is a mecca for outdoor enthusiasts, and renting a camper in Denver is an excellent way to see all that nature has to offer. The biggest attraction is Rocky Mountain National Park, with hundreds of miles of trails leading to some of America’s highest peaks. Scale the cliffs, backpack deep into the rugged terrain for a couple of days in the wild, or join an astronomy program for ranger-led observations of the Rocky Mountain night sky. If you’re interested in camping nearby, the campsites at Spruce Lake and Manor RV Park, near the Estes Park entrance, can probably accommodate your rig.

If heading out to the mountains sounds like a bit much, there are plenty of parks within the city of Denver that can give you a little taste of nature. City Park is Denver’s top urban green space and is also home to the Denver Zoo and the Museum of Nature and Science. Miles of trails and the picturesque Ferril and Duck lakes make this the perfect place for a family picnic or a romantic evening watching the sunset.

Love whitewater kayaking, but don’t have time to get out to the gnarly canyons in the mountains? The chutes at Confluence Park, just blocks from Denver’s Union Station, are the perfect place to rent a kayak and drop into some rapids on the South Platte River.

RV Parks

There’s no shortage of great campgrounds and RV parks in Denver, so all you need to decide is what you want to be closest to. Prospect RV Park is in the western suburb of Wheat Ridge, just a 15-minute drive or 45-minute bus ride from Denver’s downtown area. Retail stores and a truck stop are nearby. Alternatively, Flying Saucer RV Park is in the town of Sheridan, just ten miles south of the city and a quick drive from I-25.

Renting an RV in Denver gives you a lot of freedom of movement, and if you’d rather stay in one of Denver’s outlying cities, Golden and Aurora are probably your best bets. Freedom Road RV Park and Clear Creek RV Park are both just a 20-minute drive from Denver, but more importantly, less than ten minutes from the world-famous Coors Brewery Tour.

Denver Meadows RV Park in Aurora is just two minutes’ drive from I-225 and ten minutes from retail stores. You’re bound to find the perfect place to set up your rental RV in Denver.

Exploring the City

As the cultural capital of the Intermountain West, Denver has a lot more to offer than you’d expect from a metro area of around three million people. The Denver Zoo is one of the most popular attractions, especially with kids, and is home to over 650 species, including elephants, lions, and gorillas.

While Colorado has historically been most famous for Coors Brewing Company, the Denver area is also ranked as one of the country’s best cities for craft beer, home to dozens of breweries. Several are located near the downtown core; set aside a day to sample some suds while you’re here. Grapes aren’t forgotten in this fermentation-friendly city. Wineries dot the city’s metro area, and guided group tours offer a way to traverse them with ease.

If exotic animals and fine craft beer aren’t enough, perhaps you’d like to see what 30 million dollars in cash looks like. The Money Museum at the Federal Reserve Branch of Denver has great exhibits about the history of U.S. currency, and you might even get a free bag of money when you visit (well, of shredded bills that have been taken out of circulation).

If you don’t mind going a little farther from the city, fuel up the Denver RV rental and head to the college town of Boulder. It’s something of a miniature Denver, but with even more boutique shopping and exciting places to eat. The Pearl Street outdoor mall is at its epicenter. There’s no better place in town to window-shop and soak up the city sights, all within the shadow of the towering mountain peaks just a few miles away.
