Castlewood Canyon State Park just outside of Castle Rock is another Colorado state park worth mentioning. Head here, and you'll find tons of fun activities to enjoy in the day-use area. Beautiful footpaths wind through forests and over trickling creeks, and an array of historic sites dot the landscape of the small state park. An outdoor amphitheater and a gorgeous gazebo host events, concerts, and even weddings in a natural setting.

The massive forest located next to Colorado Heights Campground is Pike National Forest, named for Zebulon Pike, an early American explorer. Massive Pikes Peak also shares a name with the explorer and the forest, known for being one of Colorado’s famous “Fourteeners,” or mountains over 14,000 feet in height. Aside from submitting this snow-capped giant, you can swim in alpine lakes, trek through three separate wilderness areas, and camp out at one of the rustic campgrounds in the one-million-acre forest.
