Discover Poitiers

The Great Outdoors

If you're keen for some fresh air and greenery when you first arrive in Poitiers, make a beeline for Parc de Blossac. Established in the 18th century by the Count of Blossac, this 22-acre park is a wonderfully scenic spot to start your Poitiers adventure. Several walking trails lead through the landscaped gardens here, while the rose garden is particularly beautiful when in full bloom.

Next, steer your rental motorhome from Poitiers towards Parc floral de la Roseraie, which is found in the city's east. Located next to the Exhibition Centre, this eight-acre garden will delight any horticultural enthusiast. Its 9,000 rose trees and 450-plus plant species offer a vibrant, colorful display. And because it's set around ornamental lakes, the park is also the perfect spot for a relaxing stroll.

If you're eager to escape the city, La Brenne Regional Nature Park, located roughly an hour east of Poitiers, is also well worth checking out. This massive park covers some 640 square miles but remains one of the region's little-known gems. A flat landscape of ponds, marshes, and open fields, La Brenne is known for the deer, wild boar, and other native wildlife that call the area home. You'll find an array of activities within the park, but some of the highlights include swimming at Bellebouche Lake and doing some wildlife watching at the Maison de la Nature et de la Reserve.

Camping in Poitiers

Once you book an RV in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region, you'll need to find somewhere to park your rig. Happily, there are several campgrounds and caravan parks to choose from in the area surrounding Poitiers.

One option worth a look is Le Futur Campsite, which is found roughly five minutes from the city's unique Futuroscope theme park. This campground is open from April until early November and sits in a rural setting near the A10 motorway. A swimming pool and snack bar are provided on-site, and most sites feature 10- or six-amp electricity.

Alternatively, you might want to consider staying at Camping Le Futuriste, which also offers easy access to Futuroscope. This family-friendly park boasts over 100 campsites, a covered pool, and an outdoor pool with a water slide. Sites are easily accessible and separated by hedges for privacy.

There are many other campgrounds worth checking out in the local area, so compare the features and facilities of a few parks before deciding where to stay.

Exploring the City

When you're ready to go exploring in your rental motorhome in Poitiers, you'll probably want to make the Church of Notre Dame la Grande your first stop. Dating back to the 11th and 12th centuries, this majestic Romanesque church is a remarkable sight and is recognized as one of the most beautiful churches in the world. You'll want to spend a while studying the detailed sculptures on its wide facade, while the frescoes on the ceiling also date to the 12th century.

To keep the history theme going, make Musée Sainte-Croix your next destination. Found right near the center of town, this much-loved local attraction is popular with art and history buffs. Some will love checking out the archeology department, where you'll find artifacts dating from prehistoric times through until the Middle Ages, while the valuable artifacts uncovered in ancient tombs are well worth a look. And if you're interested in art, the chance to admire works by Auguste Rodin and Camille Claudel is too good to pass up.

Elsewhere, you'll find a long list of other fascinating historic attractions in Poitiers, including Baptistère Saint-Jean, which was built in the fourth century. But not everything in Poitiers is about the past, which you'll discover if you head to Futuroscope. This unique attraction is a theme park with a difference — it's all about cinema and audiovisual technologies. Here, you can marvel at 3D and 4D shows, ride on breathtaking simulators, and generally prepare to be amazed. Not only that, but Futuroscope is housed in a variety of quite unique structures and is one of the most popular theme parks in France.

When you rent a camper near Poitiers, a huge range of travel opportunities await you. And with other beautiful destinations like Limoges and La Rochelle within easy reach, there's plenty more to see nearby. So, why not make the most this of everything this beautiful region in western France has to offer?
