The van is built on the Ford Transit 350HD chassis, which makes her tough, smart, reliable, and full of the best tech available (just like Alex Kayne!). My wife and I lived in the van full time for nearly 3 years, traveling to explore the US while I attended author conferences and wrote at least six novels. I also did a ton of YouTube livestreams and podcasts from the van... so she's kind of famous.Built for two—Alex is perfect for romantic weekend getaways, just the two of you exploring the world with all the comforts and amenities of home! She has has a built-in shower and toilet, an induction cook top and microwave, a refrigerator with small freezer, and two comfy beds for sleeping. She's also off-grid and boondock ready, with solar and generator onboard, as well as gas/electric heater and overhead air conditioning. A wifi extender is also built in.Just like her namesake, Alex is ready to run. Use the built-in GPS or plug in for Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. There's also a separate entertainment system that includes a TV, DVD, radio, and cable-TV input. There is onboard water and an electric water pump for camping off grid, and all supply and waste tanks can typically last for 2-3 days with use, or extend the trip even longer by using campsite amenities. Alex has full hookups for campsite shore power and "city water" connections.Alex is a self-contained couples adventure weekend, ready to drive. Go find your inspiration out in the world, off the beaten path, or right in your favorite RV campground. Off grid or on grid, Alex will see you through! What's includedWe'll get you started with a welcome bag that contains RV-friendly toilet paper and some other necessities. We'll make sure there's fresh water onboard to start your trip (may be less than a full tank). And we'll have her gassed up with a full tank of gas before you pick up.There's also a bike rack attached to the rear door, and a receiver hitch for attaching a trailer or other hitch-mounted items (towing capacity is 4,000 lbs, hitch weight is 300 lbs maximum).RecommendationsAlex isn't quite right for extreme off-road driving, but she's amazing for camping besides lakes and rivers, just off the beaten path. We've enjoyed parking her at orchards, vineyards, golf courses, breweries and other spots, thanks to a very inexpensive annual membership with Harvest Hosts (you can become a member for around $99/year to get "free" nights at the places mentioned above!).We've explored Texas, Colorado, South Dakota, Lake Michigan... the great thing about this van is it can go just about anywhere, and the trip can be self contained. Find a place to circle back to dump and refill about every three days and spend the rest of your time just enjoying time out in nature!Other things to noteWe hate putting restrictions on a good time, but the van is an expensive investment that we want to keep in great shape. So...
- No more than two people riding in the van while it's moving. There are only two seatbelts, so this is kind of a legal and safety thing.
- No travel outside the US - If there are any problems with the van, having to deal with international travel and laws can get expensive, so we should just avoid it
- Absolutely no smoking or vaping inside the van, ever (ever).
- No pets, unfortunately.
- Use ONLY RV-friendly toilet paper (you can find it at Camping World, Walmart, and most RV campgrounds)
- If you break, damage, stain or loose anything, you'll be required to cover repairs and/or replacements.
- Bring it back with water in the tank (doesn't have to be full)
- Bring it back with a full tank of gas
- Bring it back with the black tank and the grey tank empty (there will be fees if we have to empty it)
- Bring it back clean, inside and out (there will be fees if we have to clean it)
- Don't put stickers on the van. That's our job!
Also, please note: If you do break any of the rules above we'll have to charge extra fees. We really don't want to have to do that, so don't break any rules. Deal?

Q.What flexibility is available for picking up and dropping off the RV?
A.
When you book, you'll be given a phone number for texting me, and we'll coordinate pick up and drop off. We can be pretty flexible, but we need advanced notice.

Q.How long can the van be off grid?
A.
It really depends on how much water you're using. If there are two of you taking showers every morning, you're probably going to use up water reserves in just a couple of days. Same goes for the black tank. The more you can use facilities (or perhaps the odd bush?) outside the van, the longer you can stay off grid. There is solar and a house battery, as well as a generator for power.

Q.How do I use the induction cooktop?
A.
The trick to an induction cooktop is that whatever you put on it needs to be able to stick to a magnet. So test your pan with a magnet to see if it will work. This also means you should be careful with putting anything on the cooktop that is magnetic, such as laptops, iPads, phones, etc. If you accidentally turn the stove on, it can fry your electronics and might start a fire.

Q.Does the air conditioner run on the house battery?
A.
Though the AC was advertised to run on 12 volts, it really doesn't do much good on battery power (and it runs the battery down quickly). We recommend either using shore power or running the generator, if the AC is needed.
