Lake Lanier is one of the most massive lakes in north-central Georgia, with a shoreline of over 690 miles it encompasses almost 60 square miles. When you book an RV in Hall County, you’ll be on the northwest side of this gigantic lake, and you’ll also be near popular cities like Cumming, Marietta, and Atlanta. All of these cities are within easy driving distance of Lake Lanier, which makes motorhome camping at the lake a fantastic way to see both natural and human-made attractions.

This popular Georgia lake was originally created in 1956 with the completion of the Buford Dam, which was built on the Chattahoochee River. The Chestatee River also feeds into Lake Lanier, and the lake is operated by the US Army Corps of Engineers as a flood control and water supply resource. The main purpose of the lake is for flood control to protect the Atlanta metro area, but it is also an extremely popular recreational destination for plenty of outdoor enthusiasts.

Getting Outdoors

At a lake this large, there are nearly endless nooks and crannies to explore at your leisure. Camping with an RV at Lake Lanier can provide different experiences depending on which part of the lake you camp at, and the many tributaries and arms of the lake can easily occupy you for days on end. Fishing is a popular sport at the lake, and as it is a public lake, you’ll need to have up-to-date fishing licenses to cast a line here. The most popular types of fish that live in the lake include largemouth bass, striped bass, brook, rainbow and brown trout, walleye, and crappie. Less prevalent species include catfish, panfish, and sunfish.

There are more than 90 US Army Corps, state, county, and city parks that are spread along the 690 miles of shoreline; among these 23 provide public swimming beaches. Finding a place to lay out in the sun on the sand and take the occasional swim should be easy as there are so many options, some of which are more popular than others. But with over 10 million visitors to the lake annually, it should be no surprise that camping with an RV at Lake Lanier is a local favorite.

Hiking and biking trails can be found in large numbers surrounding Lake Lanier, so seek out specific trailheads in close proximity to the campsite you end up staying at with your rental RV. Other exciting activities at the lake include a huge wintertime holiday light show that typically showcases over 6 miles of lights, summertime boat races, and more. Many of the small lakeside towns are very festive during the holidays, so don’t be afraid to rent a camper near Lake Lanier in the colder months.

Camping at Lake Lanier

There are over 11 campgrounds located on the shores of this gigantic lake, the majority of which have campsites that can be reserved ahead of time. Given the popularity of this lake in the summertime, it may be worth reserving campsites as soon as you have your RV rental details sorted out. Some of the campsites are in state park RV campgrounds, while others are located in privately owned and operates campgrounds. On the west side of the lake is Bald Ridge Creek, which is home to more than 80 RV compatible campsites.

Bald Ridge Creek offers amenities like laundry facilities, a dump station, flushing toilets, hot showers, and both electric and water hookups for campers. Other campground options at the lake include Van Pugh North Campground, with 76 sites, the Shady Grove Campground with over 100 sites, the River Forks Park and Campground with over 60 sites, and many, many more campgrounds to choose from. It is possible to camp on every side of Lake Lanier, so when visiting multiple times, be sure to switch up where you stay to experience a new part of the lake.

Exploring the Area

Many small lakeside communities exist surrounding the lake, and one of the larger of these is the town of Cumming. This smaller city is a great place to stop for gas while staying on the west side of the lake, and there is also a small selection of restaurants here to choose from. Other modern amenities in town include movie theaters, shopping centers, and seasonal fairgrounds.

Heading southwest of the lake will take you to Atlanta, the capital of Georgia. Being situated deep in the American South, Atlanta is home to a diverse collection of delicious restaurants. The most prominent theme of these restaurants is southern food, bbq, soul food, and a bit of bayou influence. No matter what your dietary desires or restrictions, you’ll be able to find a restaurant to suit you and your family.

Atlanta is also home to some wonderful and educational museums, art galleries, and similar destinations. The Children’s Museum is a fabulous family destination, while the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library and Museum are a bit more adult orientated. The Apex Museum is a powerful and educational African-American museum that chronicles American history through exhibits, replicas, and in-house workshops. There are only some of the amazing museums in Atlanta, and just like Lake Lanier, each visit to Atlanta will offer something new and exciting for guests.
