And with several other major cities also close by, Alessandria is a worthy inclusion on the itinerary of anyone looking to explore Piedmont. Here's how to plan a memorable getaway when you're exploring in a rental campervan in Alessandria.

Discover Alessandria

The Great Outdoors

If you're looking for fresh air and plenty of greenery, you'll probably want to start your city adventure in the Public Gardens of Alessandria. Located near the railway station in the heart of the city, this gorgeous green space offers a relaxing escape from the busy city. There are walking paths for those keen to enjoy a stroll in the sun, while towering trees provide plenty of shade if you need some respite from the summer heat. Plenty of cafes and restaurants are available nearby if you want to grab an espresso or a bite to eat.

Another of Alessandria's popular parks is Parco Italia, which is located just to the northwest of the city on the banks of the River Tanaro. As well as water views, this leafy park also provides an outlook towards Ponte Meier, the famous bridge designed by architect Richard Meier. This park is a great spot to just sit and watch the world go by, but it also hosts a popular food festival each May for anyone keen to sample some of the local cuisine.

Finally, for natural scenery that's sure to make an impression, drive your RV rental from Alessandria to the Capanne di Marcarolo Natural Park. Located roughly an hour's drive south of the city, this beautiful nature reserve covers more than 30 square miles of towering mountains, scenic valleys, and pretty lakes. Myriad outdoor activities are on offer in the park, with some of the highlights including hiking Mt. Tobbio and sightseeing around the calm waters of Laghi del Gorzente.

Camping in Alessandria

Once you book an RV in Piedmont, you'll need to decide where to stay. There are plenty of Alessandria RV parks to choose from, so it's worth comparing facilities at a few different campgrounds before you make a booking.

One Alessandria RV campground well worth a look is Centro Turistico Valmilana, located roughly 15 minutes north of Alessandria. Open from April until the end of October, this 200-site campground offers plenty of shade and easy access to the city's main attractions. A restaurant, three swimming pools, and various other sporting facilities are all available on-site.

Another campground you might want to check out is Camping Umberto Cagni in the nearby city of Asti. Located a little over half an hour west of Alessandria, this campground offers leafy surroundings and is open from the start of April until the end of September. Features include a restaurant and bar, kids' playground, and modern bathhouses. Once you've set up camp, play a game of ping pong or grab a slice of pizza. The campground also organizes fun events in the summer season.

Exploring the City

Of the many iconic sights in Alessandria, none are as spectacular as la Cittadella di Alessandria. Sitting to the west of the River Tanaro, this 18th-century fortress played a key role in defending the city against attack. This star fort is well known for its interesting architecture and spacious piazzas, and the sheer size of the structure is undeniably impressive.

Next, if you're a history buff, be sure to head to the Museo delle Divise Militari, located within the citadel's grounds. This interesting attraction is a must-visit for anyone interested in military history and showcases military uniforms, weapons, and memorabilia from the 19th and 20th centuries. There are over 1,500 items in the collection, including the uniform of King Umberto II.

Finally, no visit to any Italian city would be complete without checking out the local cathedral. Located near the Piazza della Liberta, Cattedrale di San Pietro is Alessandria's most important religious building. Dating to the 19th century, this Roman Catholic cathedral has quite an imposing presence and is beautifully decorated inside. It features gorgeous stained glass windows, intricate artworks, and a 16th-century painting by Callisto da Lodi.

Whether you're craving history, culture, or relaxation, Alessandria has something to please all tastes. And with other fascinating destinations like Piacenza and Pavia nearby, there's plenty more worth exploring when you rent an RV in Alessandria.
